http://www.chelseafc.com/article.asp?hlid=315132 Chelsea Reserves 1 West Ham Reserves 1 Monday, Oct 10, 2005 A second consecutive London derby brought a second consecutive draw for Chelsea Reserves, both goals at Aldershot coming in a spell shortly after half-time. Chelsea’s equaliser after West Ham had scored from a corner was from the penalty spot, Filipe Morais converting. It was a deserved reward for Morais, a speedy presence on Chelsea’s right who is capable of good delivery with his right-foot. He had struck the crossbar in the outstanding moment of the first 45 minutes. It was a first-half of little goalmouth action and it twice took goalkeeper Yves Ma Kalambay to keep West Ham out. For the uninitiated, Ma Kalambay, despite his tender 19 years is a 6’ 5” giant of a keeper and he was asked to dive full length after 17 minutes to keep out a stab goalwards by Tony Stokes after Chelsea had laboured over clearing a corner. On 27 minutes, a keeper any shorter would have been struggling when the Hammers’ Hogan Ephraim looped a bouncing ball gently over Ma Kalambay. The young Belgian, stretching backwards just managed to tip the ball off target. The best Chelsea move of the half came six minutes before the break. The ball was won by Adrian Pettigrew and moved swiftly out to Morais on the right who found Phil Younghusband with a cross. His chest control was unfortunately too strong and the danger passed. Then came Morais’ moment of bad luck. Facing goal 25 yards out, he shaped to shoot with power but then checked and curled a more carefully directed effort goalwards that Matthew Reed finger-tipped onto the underside of the bar. The ball somehow stayed out as it bounced down. All the hard work in keeping West Ham at bay was spoilt just three minutes after the restart when Chelsea conceded a very soft goal. A deep corner found an unattended Jack Jeffrey, by no means a towering presence, who with no-one stationed on the post, headed in. Within a couple of minutes Chelsea were given the chance to equalise. Jonas Elmer who had drifted in off the left-flank, collected a Morais pass and was barged over on the edge of the area by Jemel Henry. This time Morais wasn’t to be denied, confidently cracking the penalty home with the keeper going the other way. The game had burst into life. James Simmonds’ first time shot was heading for the top corner before Reed tipped it over and then the diminutive David Cowley went close for West Ham with a free-kick that skimmed the roof of the net. Morais had been booked for the foul. International call-ups had stretched the Reserves’ reserves, leading to some reshaping of the side (example: Dean Smith appearing in central defence for the first time) and some fresh faces used. When coach McGiven made a substitution with 22 minutes to go there was a reserve debut for Jack Cork (son of former Wimbledon striker Alan), coming on in place of holding midfielder Dean Furman. Furman himself was making his first start at this level - a good illustration of the youth of the team. Chelsea’s first change of the game a little earlier had brought an end to Wayne Bridge’s participation on 65 minutes, Joe Tillen a straight swap at right-back. As the game drew to a close, it took an Adrian Pettigrew deflection to prevent a dangerous Ephraim run ending with a shot on target for the visitors, but it is unlikely either side will be feeling too aggrieved over the game finishing all-square.
