Centenary Chelsea Biography out today
Monday, Oct 24, 2005
Chelsea FC, The Official Biography is available in good bookshops
today. It is, of course, for sale in the Megastore. It has a foreword
written by Roman Abramovich, published in full below.
No book has ever involved so many people, some controversial, from
Chelsea’s history. It is more than just the story of our club. It is the
recollections of many of these important people.
Among the hierarchy spoken to were Bruce Buck, Trevor Birch, Ken
Bates, Colin Hutchinson, Brian Mears and John Battersby who was secretary
from the 1940s to 1970s and is now in his 90s. Managers who were
interviewed were Jose Mourinho, Eddie McCreadie, Dave Sexton and Tommy
Docherty.
Current players talked to were John Terry, Frank Lampard, Joe Cole,
Eidur Gudjohnsen, Petr Cech and Claude Makelele. Past players from the
1950s (Frank Blunstone) to the recent past (Gavin Peacock) were
interviewed. So was Steve Clarke who straddles so much of recent history.
Children of 1930s stars Harry Burgess and Hughie Gallacher were discovered
and interviewed.
Some of our oldest fans were found. Ethel Luland aged 108 has a
wonderful memory, John Marsh in his 90s, Chelsea Pensioner Joe Cursselle
who started attending matches in the 1920s.
The foreword is written by Roman Abramovich, and it was this that was
extensively quoted from in the media last week. So for the record, here is
the whole foreword.
“When I became involved in Chelsea, I had little idea how much joy
and excitement it would bring me and I can think of no more fitting
tribute to our Centenary season than to enter it as the Premiership
champions. That is like a dream come true.
“Of course it is 50 years since our last title, and I know that
everybody at the club will be working hard to ensure that we will not have
to wait that long again.
“This book tells the story of the great history and tradition of
Chelsea and this is something I have the utmost respect for. It represents
the heart and soul of the club and the values it was built on. I hope to
carry this forward in the true blue tradition of Chelsea but also to build
even stronger foundations to last us for the next 100 years.
“Inside these pages are the people who made Chelsea, the players, the
managers, the directors, the administrators, the staff, and most
importantly, the fans. Each have made a huge contribution to a great club.
“Most of all this story is a homage to our fans, both young and old.
I regard it as a great honour that I have been asked to write this
foreword for you. Without our fantastic supporters there would not be a
Chelsea Football Club and we will never forget that. In the future we hope
to bring you more joy than you have experienced in the last 100 years.
“In order to do this many challenges lie ahead. We aim to retain the
Premiership and of course challenge again in Europe. Maybe this year we
can go one step better and get to the Champions League Final.
“In the long-term our strategy is to build the most successful
football club in the world and everything we have done so far is geared to
this. We have this vision for Chelsea and we want you, our fans, to share
that with us.”
Chelsea FC, The Official Biography is written by Rick Glanvill, a
lifelong fan who has written for the Matchday Magazine since 1994, and
reports on away matches for this website.
