http://www.chelseafc.com/article.asp?hlid=319385 Seven up for Euro award Monday, Oct 24, 2005 There is an impressive Chelsea presence in this year’s European Footballer of the Year award nominations with seven out of the fifty players named currently playing their football at Stamford Bridge. The seven are Petr Cech, Didier Drogba, Michael Essien, Frank Lampard, Claude Makelele, Arjen Robben and John Terry. It is a total only surpassed by Italian champions Juventus who have nine named, and is a significant increase on last year when Ricardo Carvalho, Petr Cech, Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard were the four Chelsea nominees. The nominations for the highly prestigious and long-established honour, which is properly titled the Ballon d’Or, were announced in the magazine France Football and the name of the winner, decided by a panel of European journalists, will be unveiled on November 28th. The award was initiated in 1956 with Stanley Matthews the first winner. The only footballer playing for an English club to have won since the 1970s was Michael Owen four years ago. Last year’s winner was Andriy Shevchenko. No player has yet to collect the trophy while at Chelsea although Ruud Gullit and George Weah were both named Europe’s best at earlier stages in their careers.
