Reaction: Mourinho "disappointed but not worried"
Sunday, Nov 06, 2005
Jose Mourinho chose to eliminate the negative in the wake of his
first managerial defeat at the hands of Sir Alex Ferguson and the ending
of Chelsea's magnificent 40-game unbeaten run. A reporter queried, in
somewhat rambling fashion, whether what happened to Arsenal last season
— the collapse after losing to Manchester United — could occur at his
club.
“No,” he said, emphatically. After a comical pause, he was asked if
his side would bounce back. “We already bounced from Betis, same result
but a big, big, big difference. Against Betis I was really upset with a
defeat,” said the Chelsea manager. “You lose against Betis and you don't
want to be with your players. You lose today and you want to be with them,
appreciate them.
“For me it’s not a problem. I’m disappointed that we lost the game
but not worried. Today we showed why we are champions and why we are top
of the league. They are calm and confident. We did enough to get a
different result.”
Although he praised United’s stoicism the Chelsea boss felt that
there was an element of luck about Darren Fletcher’s headed winner. “I
believe he don’t want to score,” he suggested, “he just wanted to put
the ball in the central area.”
The goal set up a grandstand second half with Ferguson’s men under
siege as Chelsea — notably Asier Del Horno, Frank Lampard and Didier
Drogba — either squandered great openings or found themselves denied by
last-ditch blocks and saves. Jose’s three substitutions, ending in a
3-4-1-2 formation, told their own story.
“I’m always positive,” he said. “I believe until the end of the
game, especially when your team is the best at the moment. I think in the
second half we were by far the best team, we had the game, we played well,
we had possession,. We change things and progressively [became more
attacking]. I think we didn’t deserve to lose the game but it was a fair
game with a good referee. It was a game with aggressive but correct and
fair players, so we don’t feel bad that we lose.”
There was no increase in the pressure on him, he warned. “Seven
points difference and they [United] have to win one more game. They are
under pressure. If you ask them, they would want to change position with
us.”
