Makelele, Eidur's memories and Mourinho's starting promise
Tuesday, Nov 22, 2005
Jose Mourinho said Claude Makelele will be out for around three weeks
with his knee injury. Eidur Gudjohnsen got all emotional about returning
to the ground where his father played and around which he grew up. That’s
the story of Chelsea’s low key pre-match press conference this evening.
“Just driving up here brought a few memories back,” said Eidur. “I
used to come here every week to watch my father play. It’s the team I
supported as a boy. I remember my parents saying I wouldn’t go to bed
without my Anderlecht shirt. I’ve never played here, except for after my
Dad’s games when I stole a few minutes with the ball.
“Anderlecht have always been a top team and will continue to be a
great team in Belgium for years to come. I think Belgian TV want to get my
old man over but I think he’d prefer to sit at home and watch it on TV.”
Back in the team at the weekend even before Makelele’s injury, the
Icelander dismissed the idea that Chelsea are under extra pressure because
we lie only second in the Group.
“We have to win, simple, but we have to win every game.” Looking
back to the Stamford Bridge meeting, he recalled: “They were very
organised, they had a lot of players behind the ball, they made life
difficult for us but I don’t think they threatened our goal too much. I
think it was a comfortable game in the end even though it was only 1-0.”
And he also dismissed the relevance of Chelsea’s run of no away wins
in the Champions League for over a year.
“Two of the games — we lost in Porto when we were already qualified,
in Munich we conceded two late goals in the 91st and 92nd minute and we
still qualified. The only two defeats are Seville and Liverpool of any
significance. I don’t see it as a problem. We have to win tomorrow.”
Finally, he dismissed the idea that Saturday’s win over Newcastle
was a relief and a return to good form. “I don’t think we’ve been off
our best apart from the game in Seville. I thought we played well in the
game at Manchester, especially in the second-half.”
Jose followed him and simply backed up his arguments. “We have two
matches to qualify, we need one result, so it is not bad. We need two wins
to win the Group, so it is in our hands.”
He was not interested in Anderlecht’s poor recent record in the
competition — 11 consecutive defeats — but picked up on what Chelsea’s
attitude would be to that run.
“I think one day they have to win because they are not a bad side.
Their results are not far from get a point, or win a game. I saw their
matches against Betis and against Liverpool, and especially against
Liverpool they had two great chances, and if they score the game is
different. Against Betis they hit the post before they score.
“The message I have to my players is when we look to the matches
against Everton, Betis, Man Utd and Anderlecht, they have something in
common. We are playing against teams in a difficult situation. We didn’t
start well, we concede a goal and we give life and confidence to the teams.
And they got a result against us. So I think when you play against these
teams you have to start well, start strong. I think tomorrow our attitude
will be a stronger attitude.”
He admitted he could not be sure how Anderlecht would play.
“They can still go to UEFA Cup if they get six points. Do they
believe in this? If they believe they have to win, it will be a different
game. If they don’t believe I believe they will play the same as at
Chelsea.”
Finally there was the issue of Makelele’s absence. “He’s out
tomorrow, he will be out for a few more weeks, two, three, I’m not sure.
He’s an important player for us, but we have solutions. Essien did well
against Newcastle, and we have in Diarra a boy ready to do it.
“Essien can adapt to the role. He can give defensive protection to
the central defence, give freedom to Lampard to go into attacking
positions, try to play simple and organise the game in the first and
second phase. But Diarra is ready. I have to decide — …” and he laughed
a little, “… I have made a decision already!”
But he wouldn’t reveal it.
