Chelsea Reserves 4 Crystal Palace Reserves 0
Monday, Dec 05, 2005
Chelsea Reserves recorded their second 4-0 win and produced their
best quality football of the season to breeze past Crystal Palace at home
and climb the Reserve League table.
Goals by Danny Hollands and Joe Tillen were sandwiched between
career milestone strikes by Michael Mancienne and Scott Sinclair to match
the result against Watford in September. There were good performances in
all areas of the Aldershot pitch tonight as the visitors threatened on a
couple of early occasions only.
It took an acrobatic catch from Yves Ma Kalambay, a late replacement
for virus-stricken Lenny Pidgeley, to keep Palace out in the opening
minutes but when Anthony Grant stabbed a chance through a crowd but just
wide for Chelsea soon after, the balance of the game was already shifting.
The opening strike, scored after 17 minutes oozed class. The long
strides of Mancienne carried the ball up the pitch before he passed
forward to James Simmonds. A good touch and ball out to the left invited
Hollands to shoot first time which is exactly what the skipper did,
volleying powerfully across the keeper and in. It was the Reserves' goal
of the season so far.
When Palace did venture forward again, it took some adhesive marking
by Adrian Pettigrew to force Lewis Gabban to shoot wide. Tyroe Hall had
won a race with Mancienne to cross. Chelsea were good value for a 1-0 lead
at the break. All that was lacking was a few more scoring opportunities.
They would come.
Such an opening did present itself just five minutes after the
restart when a cross from deep cleared Joe Keenan's head but found Filipe
Morais at the back post. His volley was firm but wayward.
Chelsea were turning the screw, and the only surprise about the
second goal was that it hadn't come in the minutes leading up to it. Good
work by Hollands, whose intelligent use of the ball was a feature of the
game, went unrewarded when his left-wing cross evaded everyone in the
centre. On the other flank Dean Smith pulled off a neat trick to get to
the bye-line and despite a tug at him in the area, found Simmonds. The
young makeshift striker shot but Palace keeper Banks pulled off a splendid
save.
Mancienne compensated when, from the resulting corner from Tillen, he
headed in at the near post with 55 minutes gone. It was the 17 year-old's
first Chelsea goal for either reserve or youth team.
Five minutes later Chelsea put the game out of reach, Joe Tillen
steaming away down the left onto a Ma Kalambay kick and shooting low,
Banks showing a greasy pair of gloves to allow the ball through his grasp.
Mancienne almost doubled his career tally eight minutes from time but
his volley on the turn from the edge of the area was beaten out by Banks.
Pettigrew returned it with a tight-angle volley of equal venom and again
the keeper did well to block, but only as far as substitute Scott Sinclair
who headed in from point blank-range. It was the youth team top scorer's
first at reserve team level.
The win sees Chelsea climb three places in the Barclays Premier
Reserve League South to fifth.
