Chelsea Youth went down to a home defeat to top of the table
Southampton on Saturday in the first youth game of the New Year. Third
placed Chelsea hit the post through a deflected Scott Sinclair shot when
the scores were level, but conceded early in the second-half — perhaps a
lapse of concentration on the restart.
Coach Brendan Rodgers found positives in the game. “I was pleased
overall with the performance on the first game back. This was a good game
containing two good teams.
“They were older and physically stronger than us, and we coped well
with that and should have got something from the match. We had a lot of
good performances, but I felt left-back Ryan Bertrand was outstanding in
his first game in four weeks, and Liam Bridcutt did well in midfield.”
