Delight as Cech agrees long-term stay
Wednesday, Feb 01, 2006
Petr Cech has committed himself to Chelsea until 2010 by signing an extension
to his contract.
The 23 year-old goalkeeper was just a year-and-a-half into an existing
four-year deal but his momentous first season in England, when he helped win
the League Championship and Carling Cup and he set a new Premiership record
for minutes without conceding a goal, has been recognised with the offer of
a longer deal.
Cech becomes the second Chelsea keeper to sign an extension with the club in
the last fortnight. Carlo Cudicini has agreed to stay until 2009.
Cech said of his signing:“I am very pleased. When I joined Chelsea I just
wanted to get in the team and win some trophies. I managed that last season
and have been rewarded with a new contract already. Now I want to win some
more trophies.”
Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon added: "We are obviously delighted that
Petr has committed to Chelsea for another two years until 2010. He had a
fantastic season in his first year and established himself as one of the top
goalkeepers in the world. It was always our intention to keep him for longer
than his initial contract as he has a key role to play in the long-term
development and success of the team.”
