Zola and Gustavo Poyet played all 90 minutes, Graeme Le Saux the first hour, and Kevin Hitchcock and Hughes the first-half. The first goal was a real Chelsea effort: Hitchcock's clearance, Hughes to Le Saux wide, a run and cross and Zola's sliding finish. In appalling weather Hitchcock made a number of fine saves before his final one bounced back off Gianluca Festa for an own goal equaliser. In the second-half David Speedie and John Spencer joined the action. A Poyet own goal — he never scored one in his career — put Macclesfield ahead, and their lesser age then took hold as the score moved in their favour. Zola scored from a penalty to pull the score back to 4-2 at one late stage but Macclesfield scored again. It was a wonderful night with the Chelsea contingent saying that they ought to get together again for the Masters. Zola said afterwards: “I'm so glad I made the effort to come for a very good cause. I enjoyed it and it was certainly worth it.
