Chelsea Youth won their fifth consecutive game on Saturday morning
with Scott Sinclair bagging the last two goals to take his total to four
for the week — having scored two in the reserves — and 18 for the
season.
Jimmy Smith, now in his third year, started again and scored again.
This time it took just one minute. Manager Brendan Rodgers said: “We
achieved good early pressure and when a ball came out he hit a fine shot
from the edge of the box.”
Chelsea looked like running riot, and going into half-time were
three up. Brendan describes it. “First we countered from their corner
with a great run by Fabio Ferreira who had good support from Riccy
Fernandes and he scored from Fabio's pass. Then Scott got the first of
his goals, being quickest to poach when their goalkeeper didn't hold a
shot from the edge of the area.”
But just as a perfect 45 minutes was in the making, Chelsea conceded
on the stroke of half-time. “We gave the ball away needlessly in our own
half to concede a corner,” Brendan lamented, “and then they scored from
it at the back post.”
Worse was to follow. Reading scored again on the hour to make it 3-2,
Nick Hamann saving well and, as with Chelsea's third, the forward being
quicker than the defenders to the loose ball.
But Sinclair struck again. “A terrific pass by Jimmy Smith split the
defence, and Scott Sinclair made a good run across the line to the right
side of the area where he finished.”
Brendan enjoyed the win against his former club. “It was a fantastic
performance, in particular in the first 40 minutes. We looked like we
could score even more than we did. However, Reading battled back really
well.
“We continued our excellent run which sees us move clearly into
second place in our Group behind Southampton. Next week we are away to
Aston Villa who lead their Group, and that will be a good test.”
