Ipswich Reserves 0 Chelsea Reserves 1

It was defences on top at Portman Road during Monday night's reserve
clash but the Ipswich rearguard could do nothing about Jimmy Smith's rocket
free-kick in the second-half that won the game for Chelsea.
On the balance of play it was a deserved victory for Mick McGiven's
side who after a slow start manufactured all the few chances that
punctuated the cold Suffolk night. The Chelsea back-line of Dean Smith,
new captain Adrian Pettigrew, Michael Mancienne and left-back Jonas Elmer
all put in strong performances and kept an Ipswich side, previously
prolific at home, at arm's length throughout the night.
There was an 18 minute wait for the first worthy attempt of the game,
James Simmonds expertly dispatching a volley from 25 yards when a Chelsea
corner was cleared his way. It flew just past the outside of the post.
Jimmy Smith tried a shot from even further out just a few minutes
later that Ipswich keeper Price carelessly spilled. He eagerly gathered it
before Scott Sinclair could capitalise.
Then Dean Smith raided forward from his right-back position but when
he played the ball inside, Phil Younghusband's shot was blocked. Anthony
Grant became the first player booked for a rash tackle, his habit of
collecting cautions unabated and just before the break Ipswich
right-winger Danny Haynes joined the Chelsea midfielder in the book when
reacting angrily to a decision.
Michael Mancienne put too much downward direction on a header from
James Younghusband's corner at the start of the second-half but that
chance failed to herald an increase in creativity from either side.
Ipswich, with five players with first team experience were lacklustre.
Former Blackburn youngster James McEveley was booked for the home side for
shirt-pulling shortly before Chelsea struck the winner.
It came on 72 minutes. Jimmy Smith won the free-kick himself, body-
checked on the turn. From just outside the ‘D’ of the area and to the
left, he struck the ball as sweet as he could possibly have wished. With
a slight curve it thumped off the inside of the post and nestled in the
opposite side-netting. After a moment's hesitation, Smith was sprinting
away in celebration.
There was a brief flash point after Ipswich's Gerard Nash landed a
kick on Yves Ma Kalambay after the Chelsea keeper had already clasped the
ball - but no-one in the ruckus stepped too far out of line.
With the win in sight, the young Chelsea side, for whom Ma Kalambay
at 20 years-old was the senior player, allowed a little indiscipline to
creep in as they conceded four free-kicks around their own area plus a
corner in the last five minutes. Happily all were survived for a third
away win of the season.
