Chelsea Reserves 2 Leicester Reserves 0
Monday, Mar 27, 2006
Coach Mick McGiven was able to field a relatively experienced side and
they rewarded him with a third straight win for Chelsea's reserve side,
both goals coming in the second-half.
Starting the game in front of a watching Jose Mourinho were Robert Huth,
Carlton Cole and Lassana Diarra who was outstanding on the night. Cole
grabbed his goal, the opener, with a perfect example of the finisher's
art and the second came from England Under 19 midfielder Jimmy Smith,
buoyant after his winning free-kick the week before.
Smith was involved in a good Chelsea start - powering a header just
off-target from a James Younghusband corner. Leicester responded with a
swift attack, former Fulham man Elvis Hammond not too far away with a
blasted shot after an exchange of passes with Chris O'Grady.
On 15 minutes, Chelsea midfielder James Simmonds entered the book for a
trendy deliberate handball, his in the centre of the park.
Conditions were blustery but a flying Lenny Pidgeley save kept out a
curling free-kick from Louis Dodds as an uneventful opening half-hour
drew to a close but then Carlton Cole went on the attack twice in two
minutes. A chip by Diarra put him in on goal but the England Under 21
international was expertly dispossessed for a corner after he chested
down and was lining up a shot.
Then he was sent away down the left by Elmer and easily left the defence
trailing but keeper Logan got a feint touch to Cole's shot, deflecting
it into the sidenetting.
With just over five minutes to go before the break, Pidgeley was called
upon again to keep the scores level, pushing a snap-shot from Dodds
around the post after Pettigrew and Simmonds had contrived to lose
possession.
Ten minutes into the second-half Simmonds nipped the ball away from Dodds
and found Cole through the inside-left channel. A touch outside the
covering defender and this time the left-foot finish was patient and
precise. One-nil to Chelsea.
Elmer, looking for his first Chelsea goal advanced from left-back and
almost doubled the lead soon after, his low looping shot scrambled out
by Logan. Then Smith blasted a poorly cleared ball over.
Cole, stretching the visitors on the left again went close after 65
minutes following a good Diarra pass while at the other end, Huth and Co.
were comfortable repelling the little pressure Leicester could muster.
There was a booking for Leicester left-back Connor Franklin with 15
minutes to go when he sliced straight through the back of James
Younghusband.
The goal that put the win beyond doubt came with six minutes to go. The
leaping Smith nodded in from point-blank range but Huth's aerial presence
had been vital, sending an Elmer free-kick goalwards. It was Smith's
sixth reserve goal of the season, taking him equal with Danny Hollands as
top scorer at this level.
