I went along to The Bridge on Friday afternoon and really enjoyed watching
the youth team. Thought a few of you might be interested in some views
about the youngsters.
Our victory was deserved although Cardiff recovered very well from going a
goal down in the opening minutes to dominate the first quater of the game.
Once we got a foothold however we were clearly the better side even if we
didn't actually create too many clear cut openings.
The main reason for my trip was to get a look at Scott Sinclair but, I'm
sorry to say, he was very disapointing. He played all but a few minutes of
the game out wide on the left where he struggled to make an impact. I got
chatting to some people from Bristol, including a school mate of Scott's,
and they were addament that he was being played out of position and that
he has to be played through the middle to get the best out of him.
I watch virtually no youth football at all so it'd be fair to say I might
not be the best judge but, on this viewing, there are a number of better
prospects in the squad than Scott. Shaun Cummings for example had a very
lively game playing at centre forward for the first 75 minutes then
switching to wide right for the last quarter of an hour. His pace ands
trickery caused Cardiff problems all game although without ever quite
opening them up.
Shaun is definitely one to watch in my opinion and he linked very well
with Jack Watkins when the latter came on to play centre forward for the
last 15. Jack held the ball up extremely well, appears to have a good eye
for the right pass to bring teammates into the game and produced a
wonderful strike from just outside the box that drew an equally wonderful
save from the Cardiff keeper. Even in just those 15 minutes of action I
felt you could see why Watkins is an England youth international.
Our young German, Nick Hamann, played in goal. He made a couple of decent
catches but in truth had virtually nothing to do all game. He was most
noticeable when, on several occaisions, he came well out of his area to
give an earful to one of he colleagues, Dean Furman. This was Dean's last
game for the club since he's being released at the end of the season. On
this evidence I'm sad to say that I can see why. I asked a club official
about Dean and was told that he's had offers of trial's with the Old Firm.
Obviously I wish him well but I'd be surprised if he makes it with either
of those clubs.
The entire back four had decent games. Harry Worley was dominant and calm
at Centre Back where his play reminded me a lot of Steve Wicks. Both full
backs got forward well, particularly Ryan Bertrand on the left. He
delivered one or two good crosses from open play but also seems to be the
team's dead ball specialist. It was his freekick that was headed into his
own net by a Cardiff player for our goal and Ryan came within inches of
notching a second when he flighted another freekick just over the bar.
Ryan's display at left back was the more eye-ctching but Sam Hutchinson at
right back looked the more solid defensively. He was quick, strong in the
tackle, good in the air and composed in possession. Particularly
impressive was the authoritative way he talked to and organised the
players in front of him. I liked the look of this lad and, based on this
showing, I'd say he has a chance. Yep, Sam had a good game but he was not
star man. That, in my opinion, was Liam Bridcutt.
Liam played the holding role and had a terrific outing. He read the game
beautifully, closed down space, was quick into the tackle but without ever
diving in. On top of which he displayed excellent technique and maturity.
Whenever the skipper, centre-back Jack Cork, bombed forward to set off an
attack Liam duitifully dropped into the back four to fill in.
There's more.. Liam was calmness personified in possession. He got it and
gave it quick and simple but when a penetrating ball was available he
spotted it; putting Sinclair and then Watkins through with great passes.
To top it off he came closest to a second goal when a fabulously weighted
chip was tipped onto the bar by their keeper.
Liam will be 17 next month and obviously has a lot of development to do
but I was very excited by what I saw and made a point of shaking Liam's
hand to congratulate him on his performance after the game. I'm not sure
if everyone noticed this lad because he opperated in the 'Maka' role but,
for me, his performance was worth the trip on its own.
Ricardo Fernandes didn't have a particularly impressive game I'm affraid.
He seldom produced the telling pass and didn't even manage to make a good
contribution in terms of 'continuity' since too often he squandered
possession. Jimmy Smith replaced him after an hour and looked far more
impresive. I think Smith is more experianced and that showed. He played a
little further up the pitch than Fernandes had done and his touch just
seemed more assured and certainly more effective.
Fabio Ferreira is clearly talented and has a nice trick or two. What he
seems to lack is the pace to really hurt people after he's fooled them
with his trick. Defenders always seemed to be able to recover and have a
second, or even a third, bite at him. The result of this was that he
looked good but produced little.
My guess is that he will not succeed playing as a traditional 'winger'.
I'd say he must build a solid passing game and play further up the pitch,
whether that be wide or centrally, where it's less about going past his
man and more about using his skill to buy time for the killer pass. Once
again I may be wrong but, based on this performance, I don't see a future
for Fabio as an out and out winger.
以下是 hanuma 更宏觀的觀點,畢竟他看的不是一場比賽,而是整個賽季
Scott Sinclair
He has been played out wide ever since he started for the reserves a month
or so ago. He has done well, but it is clearly not his best position and
certainly at reserve level opposition teams started to get clued up about
the danger he posed and have marked him heavily.
Shaun Cummings
Has had an average season at best and is very inconsistent at all levels.
Jack Watkins
Watkins hasn't played England level for a while I don't think and it was
his hold up play that has generally been why he hasn't been so succesful
with Chelsea this season. A decent finisher, not much more, but hopefully
this game demonstrated progress.
Dean Furman
Furman has been a standout for the youth team, a solid player for the
reserves and had a brilliant pre season youth tournament against some of
the finest youth teams in Europe. The fact that the Old Firm are showing
interest at this early age is a major credit to the lad and a great
indicator of his talents.
Harry Worley and Ryan Bertrand
Both new imports this season. Worley being the more impressive at youth
level, but both doing very well. Worley is an incredible physical
specimen for his age. I have spoken to someone who works with England
who says Bertrand is close to the same ability Ashley Cole had at the
same age.
Sam Hutchinson
Every game (I and others have seen) he is exactly as you describe him.
Very impressive 'intangibles' for one so young.
Liam Bridcutt
Very interesting. Has been a quiet performer in general. If he played
as well as you have said then I am impressed.
Ricardo Fernandes
He has looked a superb technician at times for the youth side, but being
small and Portuguese he has inevitably had massive difficulties to
overcome and I feel he has progressed well considering.
Jimmy Smith
He has been a regular hero for the reserve side, very rarely playing for
the youth team anymore. He is vastly more experienced than Fernandes and
is probably at a level where he is wasted in the reserves.
Fabio Ferreira
Not the fastest, but I think you underestimate his pace. He has skinned
several players at reserve level in his first few games and pace is
something which can be worked on. More important is decision making and
knowing when to cross or pass, something that made Beckham so succesful
as a right winger for Utd.
