The 22 year-old striker has signed a four-year contract with the Upton Park club. Chelsea Football Club would like to thank Carlton for his contribution during his time here and wishes him well at his new home. A product of the Chelsea youth system, Cole first blossomed in the 2001/2 season when he scored a combined 37 goals for the youth and reserve teams and was named Chelsea Young Player of the Year. Aged 18, he was further rewarded with his maiden first team start in the April of that season away at Middlesbrough, having made his debut as a substitute two weeks earlier. He responded with a fine headed goal. An even better solo strike followed on the opening day of the following season at Charlton, probably his finest Chelsea goal, and he spent the middle part of the campaign on loan at Wolves. He also became an England Under 21 international and would later captain the side. His 19 appearances and six goals at that level are club record totals. Cole returned to boost a flagging Champions League qualification quest with winning goals in consecutive games, at Sunderland and at home to Bolton, but after a defeat in the following game at Aston Villa, he was dropped by manager Claudio Ranieri for the remaining month. Cole went on loan for the next season to Charlton but was hampered by a lengthy injury and after a promising start the next season to a new loan at Aston Villa, he struggled. His best football had been played at Chelsea. Jose Mourinho decided he deserved the chance afforded by a place in his first team squad for last season. Cole started one match and made 11 substitute appearances, scoring once.
