Wright-Phillips raring to go
By Lewis Rutledge - Created on 6 Aug 2006
Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips is targeting an improved season at
Stamford Bridge. The 24-year-old struggled to establish himself for The
Blues last term and regularly found himself left out of the 16-man squad
entirely.
He has been linked with a move away from the Premiership champions but,
following a lively display in the pre-season friendly against MLS
All-Stars on Saturday, he is looking forward to the new campaign with a
renewed sense of optimism.
"I can't wait to start," he said. "This has been a long wait. We have been
training a lot since July 17 and we're all really excited and looking
forward to it. I feel as fit as I have in a long time. This is my first
full season with the lads and I'm loving every minute of it."
Wright-Phillips' poor form cost him a place in England's World Cup squad
this summer but he has insisted that he will emerge from the
disappointment a stronger player.
"I was a bit down missing the World Cup but every single season is
important for me," he commented. "I will handle this season in the way I
handle every season. I'm just looking forward to the fight and competition.
"When you have a setback you dig deeper and find something within yourself.
That's what I have been doing. Life in general doesn't always have to be
about football. It has helped me mature and become a bigger and better
person. Not all things went the way I planned and it's down to me to
change that all around."
Wright-Phillips has set his sights on becoming a regular starter under
Jose Mourinho, and is confident that he can nail down a place in the team.
"The challenge for me is exciting but the whole thing can make me a better
player and I am looking forward to the battle," he said. "I believe in
myself which is the main thing. Jose brought me in for a reason and I
joined the club for a reason.
"I don't have anything to prove. I will play the way I always play which
brought me to the club in the first place and that will be good enough
with the stuff I have learned as well."
Wright-Phillips admits he has been helped by the atmosphere within the
Chelsea camp.
"We are a team and it's not about any individual and we all do things
together. We are like a family," he claimed. "We are all looking forward
to the season and the challenge ahead."
