On a back garden of a pitch, Chelsea Reserves drew the last pre-season
game in a competitive match full of muscular tackles.
Both goalkeepers had to make fine saves. It was 0-0 at half-time, then
Walton & Hersham, who play in the Ryman's League, took the lead when a
deflected cross looped over goalkeeper Ma Kalambay allowing a simple
headed finish.
The equaliser was a good goal, Fabio Ferreira running free and crossing
first time for Scott Sinclair to score. Sinclair, who has been amongst the
goals in pre-season, destroyed the Walton & Herhsam defence with his
running, but failed to finish his further chances.
An excellent crowd watched. They had turned out in support of the Alan
Dowson testimonial. Dowson has played for and managed Walton & Hersham,
and played in the old boys' game beforehand when his team beat Chelsea
4-0. Amongst the Chelsea players were Dave Beasant, Gary Locke over from
New Zealand where he now lives, Gary Chivers, Ray Wilkins, Garry Stanley,
Kerry Dixon and Tony Cascarino.
