Football Icon 2 - the names to impress
Wednesday, Oct 04, 2006
The judges who will decide the winner of the second series of Football
Icon, which hits the screens this Friday, have been announced.
One of the biggest searches for soccer talent ever held in the UK is back
and three main judges will keep expert eyes open throughout, aiming to
find a Chelsea star of the future.
Two remain the same from the first series of Football Icon — Eddie Newton
and Neil Bath - and they will be joined this year by Jamie Redknapp.
'Steady' Eddie Newton was a Chelsea home grown midfielder who became a key
player in Glenn Hoddle and Ruud Gullit's Chelsea teams of the mid 1990s.
The highlight of a career cut short by injury was scoring the second goal
in the 1997 FA Cup Final win and he also collected winners' medals for the
Coca Cola Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup. Eddie is now a coach in the
Chelsea Academy.
Neil Bath is the Chelsea Academy manager and has vast experience in
spotting and nurturing young football talent having first started coaching
Chelsea schoolboys in 1993.
Jamie Redknapp played 17 times for England, scored one goal and would
undoubtedly have appeared more times for his country had injury not
struck. A midfielder for Bournemouth, Liverpool, Tottenham and
Southampton, he is now frequently on screen as a TV football pundit.
Later in the series, Chelsea's reserve team manager Brendan Rodgers will
add his opinion to those of the three main judges when the reserves are
involved in a game with the Football Icon boys. Also providing input will
be Frank Arnesen, chief scout and director of youth football development.
Then when the competition reaches the final three contestants, Jose
Mourinho no less will have a say.
Football Icon 2 begins as 8pm, Friday October 6th on Sky One.

Football Icon 2 - the skills tests
Thursday, Oct 05, 2006
One of the biggest ever searches for football talent is on, and the
initial stage can viewed this Friday when Football Icon returns to the
screens. Skill tests were used to cut 10,000 early entrants down to 40.
Some of those skills tests can be watched on video here.
Football Icon 2 aims to find the next Chelsea star of the future and the
recruitment process began back in May when we embarked on the nationwide
Roadshow search around the UK. Venues in Edinburgh, Manchester, Newcastle
and London staged seven Chelsea Football Icon skill tests.
They can be viewed being undertaken in the video clips below:

The tests were designed specifically by Chelsea Academy staff to find
talented young players aged 16-18 and give them an opportunity to live
their dream. The eventual lucky winner of Football Icon will receive a
professional contract with the Blues.
Neil Bath, Chelsea's Youth Academy manager says: ‘The Roadshow skills
test stage is crucial to choosing which players are good enough to go
through to the next part of the selection process,’ adding, ‘each test
has been carefully designed to highlight players speed, agility, control,
passing and technique, all key aspects for a top young footballer.’
Each player that applied had their individual tests timed using state of
the state-of-the-art technology used by the Chelsea Academy. Each test has
a benchmark time which all players aimed to achieve or better.
Using this benchmark, players were awarded a points score. Individual
skill test scores were then added together so each player knew their total
before they left the Roadshow. Players who received a score of 70,000 or
more (out of a possible 86,000) were automatically selected to go through
to Stage 2.
Only the top 40 players, from the thousands who applied were selected from
the Roadshows to attend stage 2, the 'Selection Weekend'.
The winner of this year's Football Icon, looking to follow in the
footsteps of last year's winner, Sam Hurrell, the 18 year-old who is
currently a young professional at Chelsea, will be announced in December.
See how this year's thousands fare at the nationwide Roadshows by tuning
into Football Icon 2 on Sky One at 8pm, Friday October 6.

Football Icon 2 - Why Chelsea are involved
Friday, Oct 06, 2006
Football Icon, which returns to TV screens tonight for its second series,
aims to find players others football clubs may have missed and give them a
chance to win a professional contract. Chelsea Academy manager Neil Bath
explains why Chelsea are happy to host the search.
He starts by admitting he was initially hesitant about the original
concept.
“At first, even though the idea was good, I thought finding a footballer
at 16 or 17 years-old who was not already playing at a professional club
but was good enough to play at Chelsea would be difficult,” Bath says.
No attachment to a professional club is one of the stipulations upon entry
to Football Icon.
Series One changed his mind. It was felt the positive points outweighed
any potential risks.
“Having thought through the process of the search, and seen the outcome
of the programme, I feel it is a very positive vehicle for our Academy's
image,” he explains.
“I really believe we can utilise the TV coverage to showcase what we do
at the club's Academy, how we manage our youth development programme and
give the general public an exclusive insight to our work.”
Tune in tonight to Football Icon 2 on Sky One at 8 pm to see the Academy
work in progress, and to watch thousands of boys begin the quest to follow
last year's winner Sam Hurrell, the 18 year-old left back who has had his
professional contract at Chelsea extended.
Last year's project was very successful and was second only in Sky One's
viewing figures to The Simpsons! This year both Chelsea and Sky One hope
the series will be even more popular and Bath sums up by saying:
“The club are very happy with Football Icon. Our Academy have invested
time and resources in the programme concept and we've appointed a full
time project manager to help develop and improve the awareness of both
Football Icon and Chelsea Football Club in this country and around the
world.”
