During their first session at the Chelsea training ground, the boys were introduced to Frank Arnesen, the Director of Youth Development, who will be taking a keen interest in their progress. He said he was impressed by the overall standard. There were also messages of support from the Chelsea Manager, Jose Mourinho, who urged the young hopefuls to make the most of their opportunity. “I think the worst thing in a human being is when you have talent and don't use it.” The boys, who are competing for the star prize of a professional contract with Chelsea, played their first competitive game against a Sutton United XI. They won 2-0 with goals from striker, Stuart Gates, and midfielder, David Palmer. Later, four of the boys — Stuart Gates, together with midfielders, Anthony Cook ('Cookie') and David Milton, and central defender, Carl Magnay, were called into the Reserves' squad for the pre-season friendly against Cheshunt. Unfortunately, before the game, Stuart Gates suffered a serious ankle injury in training, which threatens his progress in the competition. David Milton started the game against Cheshunt. Not bad for a 17 year old Chelsea fan, who'd only been training at the Academy for a few days ! In the second half, 'Cookie' and Carl Magnay made brief appearances as substitutes. The result won't be one they choose to remember — a weakened Reserves lost 4-0. To the relief of all 14 of the boys, Neil Bath, the Academy Manager, and Football Icon's chief Judge, announced that there would be no eliminations during the week. During future episodes of the Series, which is being shown on Sky One every Friday, the numbers will be cut week-by-week until there is an eventual winner. The action at the Football Icon Mansion centred on the young hopefuls getting to know their palatial new surroundings, including the kidney-shaped swimming pool and the 22 seat cinema. Eddie Newton, the former Chelsea F.A. Cup Winner, who's also one of the Football Icon judges, will be paying regular visits to the Mansion to find out how the boys are getting on. Each week, he'll be appointing a Captain, who with two other Icon boys, will be allowed exclusive access to the Penthouse suite. The Captain and his friends will also be given a number of privileges and benefits. During the Series there will be a number of surprises ! Eddie's first appointment as Captain was Carl Magnay, chosen because of his attitude on and off the pitch and his leadership qualities. The winner of the competition will be announced in December.
