Leeds complete a Wise move
By Phil Jackson - Created on 24 Oct 2006
Dennis Wise and his assistant Gus Poyet have been confirmed as the new
management team at Leeds United.
The ex-Chelsea duo have linked up with chairman Ken Bates after a
successful start to the season with Swindon Town. They have built on a
solid foundation at the County Ground and have given the club a real
chance of promotion.
But the dream offer of a Championship club like Leeds, was too good for
Wise to turn down, and though there had been some financial wranglings
between the two parties, the Elland Road board have concluded an agreement
with the League Two side.
"A compensation package has been agreed between the two clubs and Swindon
Town have placed on record their thanks to Leeds United for the
professional manner in which they made their approaches," a club statement
read.
"Dennis will take over as manager of the club from Wednesday October 25
and will be assisted by Gus. Andrew [Beasley] joins us as a goalkeeping
coach with immediate effect."
Wise is already understood to have met with the players at training on
Tuesday and will get his first look at his new team in their Carling Cup
third round game at home to Southend United.
Pre-empting the announcement, Bates discussed the appointments in his
programme notes for the match.
"After much deliberation the unanimous choice was Dennis Wise and his
assistant Gus Poyet," Bates declared. "I am aware that he may not be
everybody's cup of tea but this is not a popularity contest. It is a
question of the right man to resolve a serious situation."
Leeds have made an appalling start to the season so far, after Kevin
Blackwell and then caretaker manager John Carver both failed to lift the
team out of their slump.
Carver has now left the club following the 5-1 defeat at Luton Town on
Saturday as reserve team boss Dave Geddis takes charge for the Southend
tie.
Leeds currently stand 23rd in the Championship, just a point clear of
bottom side Hull City, and will welcome the Shrimpers back to Elland Road
on Saturday, for Wise's first official game at the helm.
