YOUTH CUP REPORT: NOTTINGHAM FOREST 0 CHELSEA 4
Posted on: Tue 12 Jan 2010
A high-quality display has put the Under 18s into the fifth round of this
season's FA Youth Cup.
Three second-half goals, two from centre-forward Marko Mitrovic and a
special strike from Conor Clifford, were added to an early first-half
header by Daniel Pappoe (pictured above) to make a scoreline reflecting
the often one-way traffic at the City Ground.
Two years ago Chelsea's youth side got stronger and stronger as they went
through the competition to the Final, and after a competent 2-1 win over
Charlton in the previous round, this was a big step up in performance
level.
There was one change to the starting 11 that had beaten Charlton before
Christmas, a match that was the youth team's last outing. Milan Lalkovic
was the player left out of the front three with Aliu 'Kaby' Djalo coming
into midfield. That meant a slight reworking of the 4-3-3 with Jacopo Sala
moving forward from his midfield role in the third round to play wide
right of the forward line.
Chelsea moved the ball forward with purpose and speed from the off. It
took only eight minutes for the well-deserved opener to arrive, schoolboy
centre-half Pappoe using all his 6ft 3ins to meet Gokhan Tore's corner and
head firmly home.
Mitrovic had a shot soon after when defender Karlton Watson allowed a
Jeffrey Bruma pass to escape him but the effort from Chelsea's Swedish
centre-forward was blocked.
Then Sala couldn't make his header after Tore burst down the left and
crossed dangerously. Tore (pictured below), a Turkish Under 21
international at the age of 17, was causing Forest plenty of problems with
his delivery from the flank. He was taking all the corners and the home
side's defence were looking vulnerable to any reasonably flighted aerial
ball into their area.

On 21 minutes Forest won their first corner and Chelsea survived when
keeper Sam Walker failed to get any distance with his punch. As the home
team followed up, the Chelsea keeper saved from Tom Mullen's shot. This
was their best spell. A shot from outside the box was hit straight at
Walker but those few minutes apart, the Chelsea defence held the upper
hand throughout the game.
On 36 minutes Forest midfielder Robbie Gibbons became the game's first
booking with a trip on Kaby who was showing him a clean pair of heels.
Chelsea's Portuguese midfielder was another enjoying a good half. Walker
fielded a long-range drive from Mullen and Conor Clifford soon had a
Chelsea shot blocked before it could trouble the home team's keeper.
A single goal lead at the break did not reflect the Blues' superiority.
The match was so far following the pattern of the Charlton win.
There was a set-back at half-time when Bruma was lost to a hamstring
concern. Billy Knott, back from suspension came on at left-back with Aziz
Deen-Conteh moving to the middle. The sub soon had an impact, attacking
and clearing a dangerous Forest cross.
Conor Clifford struck a shot that the home keeper Zannettos Mytides tipped
away from the top corner but the Chelsea captain took a painful kick in
the process and needed prolonged treatment off the pitch.
It was another of the midfielders, Josh McEachran, who was replaced by
Lalkovic on 77 minutes with Sala moving back into midfield. Again the
substitute was soon in action, Lalkovic turning away from Forest left-back
and captain Kieran Freeman and continuing his run before launching a shot
onto the bar. Then Knott's cross was headed straight at the keeper by Sala
as Chelsea pressed hard for a second goal.
A Knott shot was tipped over before Sala really should have made it 2-0
after a Lalkovic pass gave him a one-on-one with the keeper but he
couldn't lift his shot enough and the save was made.
On 74 minutes came the relief and as at Charlton, it was Mitrovic who
found the net, his shot from inside the box deflected in after Tore,
playing only his sixth youth game of the season, had again supplied the
ammunition, taking a header from the solid Deen-Conteh and driving at the
heart of the Forest defence.
Daniel Meadows was Forest's second booking, an illegal trip seemingly the
only way Forest could stop Tore.
From the free-kick that followed, Conor Clifford scored with an
extraordinary shot from 35 yards when the ball was played his way.

Now the young Blues were turning on the style. Goal four was a classic
cross and centre-forward's downward header - Lalkovic sending it over and
Mitrovic diverting it in with two minutes left on the clock.
Chelsea will play Portsmouth at home in the next round.
'This was a really tough challenge tonight,' said youth team manager
Dermot Drummy. 'Forest were six or seven games unbeaten before this and
had beaten Liverpool and speaking to their coach before he said they were
in good form.
'We created chances from crosses in the first half and didn't convert
them. We had a period where they were causing us problems in midfield and
when we changed it we were a little stronger in there and we took our
chances.
'Gokhan Tore has turned in a great performance tonight. Conor has been
fantastic, getting a really bad tackle but getting up and sticking one in
and Kaby is an international player and quite experienced and they never
stopped trying to play.'
On Bruma's injury he reported: 'With Jeffery being a first-team squad
player, we are grateful when we get him and as soon as we felt he might
have a hamstring problem we took him off because if he went on and pulled
it he could have been out two months.
'My biggest pleasure tonight was that we fought and to do that and play is
what you have to do week in, week out and is what our first team do. We
don't know if the next round will be at the Bridge but the more fans we
can get to the game the more it is good for the boys.'
