YOUTH CUP: A DREAM COME TRUE
Posted on: Wed 05 May 2010
Jubilation reigned around Stamford Bridge last night as Dermot Drummy's
side won our first FA Youth Cup trophy since 1961.
A hard-earned victory over Aston Villa, which saw the side comeback from a
one-goal deficit, set a target for the senior side to replicate on
Saturday 15 May, as the club strives to dominate the competition.
It was the second game of a two-leg final that was won in west London, as
a second-half comeback saw Marko Mitrovic and captain Conor Clifford both
net in front of the Shed End.

隊長接受採訪
'It is a dream come true,' says Clifford. 'I am delighted. We had personal
goals at the beginning of the season and I said mine was to lift the Youth
Cup as captain, and I have done it now. It hasn't sunk in yet, it is
brilliant.'
Last night's victory led to the first of three potential trophies Chelsea
could win in 12 days as the senior side head into the final game of our
title campaign on Sunday.
And like the earlier first leg, which took place last Thursday, Aston
Villa took a first-half lead before the Blues retaliated after the break.
The difference this time was that the Academy side sealed the win before
extra-time ensued, when Clifford's crisp, 25-yard shot screamed into the
back of the net.
'Villa are a very competent team and they are very good at defending,'
explains Jeffery Bruma, who played in Chelsea's last FA Youth Cup Final in
2008 and scored the equaliser in last week's 1-1 draw at Villa Park.

布魯馬頭頂冠軍
'We started very well but they scored and then we dropped a little bit but
in the second half everyone stayed focused and we just kept playing.
'We had loads of chances before we found the goal so everyone felt as
though the goal was going to come. Everyone had that hope and belief and
we went on to score two goals altogether. It was brilliant.
'We've won the Cup and it feels great! In 2008 we were in the final, we
never won it, but in 2010 we have won it at the Bridge, it's very
exciting.'
The Cup was secured in front of thousands of fans who turned out to
support the young Blues, providing an electric atmosphere for the aspiring
stars. There's no doubt the noise from the stands inspired the side
throughout, especially when the visitors went ahead.
'The fans were crazy,' reports Bruma. 'It was a big thing from everyone
who came to watch us because at 1-0 down it kept us going and meant we
kept our belief.
'The fans were the reason we played the way we did, they made a massive
difference to the result.'
Clifford adds: 'Playing in front of 10,000 was amazing. The Chelsea fans
were brilliant, not every club has the fans getting behind the youth like
that and it was brilliant to see them all out and singing and cheering us
on.'
Villa's hopes of winning the competition began to sink in the 64th minute
when Mitrovic broke towards the goal, feeding off a clever cross from
Jacopo Sala to tap in at the near post.

'I always have to read the wingers and know when they are going to cross,'
says Mitrovic, 'so I knew Sala was going to put the ball in at the post
and I made sure I was there waiting.
'It feels really good to win, we have worked so hard for this and we are a
very passionate side so there is plenty to celebrate. I have scored many
goals this season, with six goals in the Youth Cup, so this has been a
brilliant season for me and now for the team as well.'
The captain never had too much doubt in his side and always felt the Blues
would be deserved winners of the competition.
'We always looked the stronger team but just couldn't take our chances,'
says Clifford. 'It was just a case of keep going and going and waiting for
the weak link of their team to make a mistake and it paid off, we got back
into it with a great goal from Marko and a good goal to win it for us.
'But we were piling on the pressure and seeing their faces, they were
getting nervous and were asking the ref how long was left and that was
giving us more incentive to keep going at them. And lucky enough we got
the breakthrough.'
Whether it was luck or hard work, that's one FA Cup trophy secured from
our season, now the senior side have to fight for a second in two weeks'
time.

REACTION: THE YOUNG ENTERTAINERS
Posted on: Wed 05 May 2010
Youth team manager Dermot Drummy was just three months old when Chelsea
last won the FA Youth Cup prior to Tuesday night.
Nowadays he is a highly-experienced coach of teenage footballers and in
his first full season in his current role at Chelsea, he has guided a team
to lift the most prestigious trophy of its kind for the third time in the
club's history.
No-one could say this crop of players didn't deserve it. They have been
clearly the better side in every game in the cup run, from Charlton way
back in December to the past week's two-legged victory over Aston Villa.
Last Thursday Jeffrey Bruma equalised with a free-kick at Villa Park and
last night, with Villa ahead again, first Marko Mitrovic converted and
then Conor Clifford smacked in a winner from the edge of the area to
complete a second-half recovery.
These two matches presented a new challenge to the Under 18 side. They
were the first time in the competition that Chelsea had been behind.
Drummy was not surprised the players held their nerve and played their way
into a lead.
'I knew about the character,' he told Chelseafc.com after the match.
'Conor Clifford embraces that character, as does Jeffery Bruma. I talk a
lot with [Reserve manager] Steve Holland and our assistant Adi Viveash
about the fantastic character of the lads. There is no one bigger than the
club, we teach that from the age of nine.
'It was a great Youth Cup Final over two legs,' Drummy decided. 'Full
credit to Aston Villa, they performed very well and scored with a great
header. The game was played in the right spirit, there was no moaning at
the referee and the Villa coaches were very complimentary about us at the
end and that was nice.
'Villa were really dogged but we performed fantastically in the second
half to come back with two goals and hopefully everyone who came and the
people who watched on Chelsea TV will have looked at it and said we play
entertaining football.
'You have to give credit to the young lads for playing that way in front
of all those people. To take the ball down and play when you might take a
risk and the crowd see you make a mistake takes courage and a strong
philosophy. They did it admirably. The crowd was absolutely fantastic,
they got behind the boys.'
There were over 12,000 tickets sold and no-one entertained spectators more
on the night than 17-year-old attacking midfielder Josh McEachran who had
a big hand in Mitrovic's equaliser.
'I would pay to watch Josh,' claimed Drummy, who previously coached
Chelsea's Under 16s. 'He does things that are like dancing with the ball
and he is a wonderful talent and a wonderful personality. He is a young
but I think in one or two years we will maybe see him centre stage.'
The manager also complemented Rohan Ince who came into the side at the
Final stage following injury to Danny Mills Pappoe. Ince had been out for
many months with his own injury.
'I gave Rohan a little rocket at half time because he was doing things
with the ball at times which I thought were schoolboy-like and he didn't
like it, but second half I thought he was fantastic.
'It was a big miss for Danny, and he is learning about football, but he
has got a medal.'
Unable to collect a medal at the end was midfielder Kaby who was carried
off in the closing minutes.
'Kaby has gone to hospital, he might have hurt his back, bless him,'
reported Drummy. 'He is a lovely lad and he has missed the ceremony but
we'll make up for that when we get him back.
'I am very pleased for everyone in the Academy, especially for [Academy
manager] Neil Bath who has been here 14 years. It is a fantastic Academy
and we have got to keep that going.
'All the staff involved deserve this, it wasn't just the team. We have
been waiting to win this FA Youth Cup and it is a lovely feeling.'
