YOUTH REPORT: BRISTOL CITY 1 CHELSEA 2
Posted on: Sat 30 Apr 2011
A young Chelsea Under 18s side secured an away win over Bristol City
thanks to goals from Bobby Devyne and Alex Davey today.
All three goals came during the second-half as Chelsea took the lead
before City equalised. A Davey header then put the Blues back in front
with just over 10 minutes left to play.
Under 15 Ruben Loftus-Cheek returned to competitive action following a
long term injury, he made his Under 18 debut and joined George Saville and
Anjur Osmanovic in midfield.
Chelsea struggled for the first 10 minutes playing into a strong wind
while Bristol pushed high up the pitch and pressured the Blues' back line.
The Under 18s soon settled though and despite a fairly uneventful half,
Adam Nditi and Devyne each produced a chance on goal after feeding off
Saville through balls.
However, both those attempts were blocked by the City keeper and the
first-half ended goalless without the hosts testing Jamal Blackman between
the Chelsea posts.
There were no changes for the Blues before the restart and it took only
five minutes for the visitors to take the lead.
A good run by Boumesca Na Bangna put Bristol on the back foot before
Saville took possession inside the area. The subsequent shot was a
powerful one but the City keeper managed to palm away only for the ball to
land at Devyne's feet six yards out from goal. The Chelsea striker then
calmly slotted home with 50 minutes on the clock.
The hosts pressured Chelsea for an equaliser but it would take 25 minutes
for the goal to arrive. After breaking down the left flank, Scott Wilson
crossed. The ball then bounced across Chelsea's area before an unmarked
Joe Lennox tapped in at the far post.
With the scores level, Chelsea immediately retaliated and took the lead
again three minutes later. The goal came courtesy of a Saville freekick
which Davey expertly nodded home 11 minutes before full-time.
Chelsea shot-stopper Blackman was forced to make several good saves during
the closing stages of the game to secure an away win for the Under 18s.
'It was a good performance considering we had five Under 16s and one Under
15 in the squad,' said Academy goalkeeper coach Mark Beeney, who stood-in
for an absent Dermot Drummy.
'We deserved to win and the young lads did really well. Ruben Loftus-Cheek
was outstanding on his debut and Jamal Blackman, George Saville and Alex
Davey all performed really well.'
