RESERVE REPORT: MANCHESTER CITY 4 CHELSEA 0
Posted on: Thu 05 May 2011
Chelsea's reserves will need to win their last game of the season at home
to Wolves if they are to be crowned Barclays Premier Reserve League South
champions.
Steve Holland's youngsters passed up the first of two opportunities away
at Manchester City on Thursday night, well beaten by an impressive
Manchester City side at Hyde's Ewen Fields stadium.
Behind early, Chelsea struggled to get out of second gear and having
fallen two behind before half-time lost goalkeeper Jan Sebek to illness.
Two goals within a couple of minutes midway through the second half
condemned the Blues to a heavy defeat, but there is still another chance.
Consistency in both personnel and form has been a key ingredient in the
second string's success this season, and Holland made just one enforced
change to the side that started against Aston Villa last Tuesday.
Nathaniel Chalobah is away with England Under 17s, and so Michael Woods
came into the three-man central midfield.
City, despite their large first team squad featured just one senior
member, but goalkeeper Shay Given, a veteran of more than 110
international appearances for Republic of Ireland needed little
introduction to the young Blues, who knew a win here would guarantee the
southern reserve league title.
They could barely have got off to a worse start though, falling behind
after just five minutes when City's Swedish forward John Guidetti, one of
six in their line-up with first-team experience, got behind the Chelsea
defence to guide the ball beyond Jan Sebek.
Head injuries to Carl Magnay and Adam Phillip threatened to derail the
Blues further but both recovered and Phillip could have found an equaliser
when Milan Lalkovic threaded him in, Given advancing off his line to make
a very good save from our reserves' top scorer.
At the other end James Poole chipped wide and Guidetti fired over from
close range after Chris Chantler had found his run, while Magnay found
space once more to head straight at Given.
City were still very much on top, Josh McEachan struggling to get into the
game on a poor surface, and Jeremy Helan had a golden opportunity to
double the lead when Sebek's weak punch fell at his feet, the Frenchman
contriving to fire wide from 15 yards, but it was little over a minute
before they did take a two-goal lead.
Andrea Mancini, son of City manager Roberto, played in Abdisalam Ibrahim,
who with the help of a touch off a Chelsea defender beat the oncoming
Sebek to put his side firmly in the driving seat.
Conor Clifford was booked for a keen challenge 10 minutes before the
break, with hinting at a couple of feuds to come. Magnay had fallen out
with Guidetti having been caught in the face again, while Gokhan Tore and
Mancini were spoken to by the referee.
Play was then stopped after Guidetti had reacted badly to Michael Woods,
and the forward was booked. He was joined shortly afterwards by Phillip,
who had arrived late for a tackle.
With all this going on, Sebek was forced off through illness, replaced by
first year scholar Jamal Blackman, making just his second reserve
appearance.
Seven minutes into the second half the keeper had to beat away a powerful
drive at his near post, but Chelsea did not clear and allowed James Poole
a chance, the forward going close with a spectacular overhead kick.
The hosts looked too comfortable, Lalkovic the lone Chelsea striker forced
to chase scraps rather than rely on the effective through balls he has
become used to.
City captain Shaleum Logan clipped the crossbar with a deep cross, before
Chelsea just started to threaten once more. Clifford's rangy pass picked
out Phillip, who attempted a first-time volley that flew well wide.
Magnay brought Given into action with a pop from distance while Blackman
saved with his legs from Mancini but the Chelsea youngster would soon be
beaten.
City opened Chelsea up with some passing from right to left, the ball
eventually finding its way to substitute Harry Bunn who had the time and
space required to pick his spot and wrap up the home side's victory.
City made it four just a couple of moments later after Guidetti reversed a
pass between Tomas Kalas and Magnay into Poole's path, and he was able to
lift the ball over Blackman and into the far corner. Game over.
Phillip could have restored a little pride within a minute of the fourth
goal when he found himself one on one with Given, but the 35-year-old came
out on top by going down low at the forward's feet. His performance had
been faultless.
Despite the deficit Chelsea heads did not drop and they kept plugging
away, without reward, for a goal. Woods did get the ball in the net but
that was chalked out because McEachran had taken a free-kick too quickly,
the midfielder booked for doing so.
So the title chase goes into the last game of the season, Wolves at
Stamford Bridge on Monday. Your support at Stamford Bridge will be very
welcome.
