YOUTH REPORT: CHARLTON ATHLETIC 2 CHELSEA 1

The youth team ended their matches for the season by blooding more
schoolboys in the side with one young debutant scoring the goal.
Fankaty Dabo came on as substitute and found the net in a much-improved
performance after half-time in Thursday afternoon's match, the home side
having found the net twice before the interval against a Chelsea side that
began with five schoolboys, two of them Under 15s, with three more
schoolboys used as subs.
Dermot Drummy's side, who lost centre-back Alex Davey to injury early on,
were lax in defence in the opening 45 minutes and needed keeper Jamal
Blackman to make several outstanding saves to keep the score down.
Charlton also hit the post.
But Chelsea should have had two penalties over the course of the game and
Bobby Devyne and Reece Mitchell went close with shots. Amin Affane, who
hit the post with a free-kick in last week's youth match, was not too far
away with another deadball effort. Dabo, one of the England Under 16 side
that won the Victory Shield home international tournament in March, scored
when he picked up possession inside the area.
'We were poor defensively first half but I was very pleased with the
second half, we played some really good football,' reports youth team
manager Drummy (pictured).
'We created chances and probably deserved a draw but most pleasing was
that we did this with young players who will form much of the youth team
next season.
'Bobby Devyne and Ben Sampayo will now leave us, hopefully to get a career
somewhere else and we thank them for all their hard work and wish them all
the best.
'Our Scholar of the Year, which is voted by the Academy staff, was Toddy
Kane with Jamal Blackman coming a very close second. Toddy went to Bolton
for the youth coaches' conference and all the staff were up there. He
received his award from Vernon Kay and he met Amir Khan so that was
fantastic.'

Although their league fixtures have been completed, the youth squad will
carry on training until 24 May in case any are needed for the reserve
team's play-off on Monday or for first team training sessions beyond that.
'I hope all Chelsea fans have a lovely summer,' says Drummy, 'and we look
forward to next season and making progress with the Academy players.'
