DANIEL STURRIDGE has urged Chelsea to have faith in the next generation of
stars as they rebuild in the wake of Carlo Ancelotti's sacking.
Ancelotti was ruthlessly axed on Sunday after the Blues lost their final
game of the season 1-0 at Everton. Chelsea still finished second in the
Premier League but the lack of silverware did not sit well with the club's
trigger-happy hierachy.
After joining Bolton on loan in January, Sturridge could only look on as
an interested spectator as the season collapsed at Stamford Bridge. But
the England Under-21 striker is determined to lead the charge as the
London outfit's young guns battle to make an impact next term.
He told SunSport: "I want to stay at Chelsea and fight for my place. Next
season I want a starting place and maybe to get into the full England side
as well. From there, I just want to try and win as many trophies as I can."
Chelsea fans are keen to see the likes of Sturridge, Josh McEachran,
Jeffrey Bruma, Gael Kakuta and Ryan Bertrand given more opportunities to
shine at the Bridge.
And Sturridge has highlighted midfielder McEachran, 18, as someone who can
deliver for both club and country.
He added: "McEachran will be a huge player for Chelsea because he's got
everything a midfielder needs in his game. He's very young but I don't
think his age has anything to do with what he can do on the pitch. He'll
be playing first-team football next season as he's ready for it now."
Sturridge netted eight goals in 12 Premier League appearances for Bolton
and is adamant he can impress Chelsea's new manager — whoever it may be.
But he admits he owes Bolton boss Owen Coyle a massive debt for giving him
the platform to show he can cut it in the Premier League.
The former Manchester City man said: "My good form at Bolton was down to
hunger and wanting to succeed. I gained valuable first-team experience
there and it gave me the self-assurance I needed to know I was good enough
to start in the Premier League.
"I found working with Coyle very, very special because he's done a lot for
me as an individual. He's helped me to become a better player and to have
more confidence in myself. He's given me the opportunity to showcase my
talents and I'll never be able to repay him enough for that."
Sturridge is also looking forward to playing with flamboyant Brazilian
David Luiz. The centre-back made an immediate impact at the Bridge after
joining the Blues from Benfica for £21million in January.
Luiz netted vital goals in the home Premier League wins over Manchester
United and Manchester City before falling out of favour with Ancelotti
towards the end of the Italian's reign. But Sturridge is impressed by what
he has seen so far from the classy defender.
He said: "Luiz has made a huge impact already. He's come in and stamped
his authority by adding a new dimension to the team."
Daniel Sturridge is mentoring for Disney XD's Aim High campaign, which
offers fans the chance to take part in a one-on-one mentorship with
