UNDER 21 CHAMPIONSHIPS: ENGLAND MAKE A POINT
Posted on: Mon 13 Jun 2011
Daniel Sturridge and Ryan Bertrand (pictured below) played the full 90
minutes as a late leveller gave England Under 21s a point from a game in
which they created few chances.
The Chelsea pair had been selected for their nation's opener in the
European Championships for this age group with Jack Cork on the bench.
Sturridge was quickly into his stride in the game against Spain which was
held in Denmark, pressuring the opposition goalkeeper David De Gea,
recently linked with a move to Manchester United, into a loose clearance,
but it was the Spanish who took the lead on 14 minutes.
England were undone at a corner although there was a hint of handball as
the ball was turned over the line from close range.
Stuart Pearce's side showed little sign of finding an equaliser for much
of the first half although Sturridge wasn't far away from making contact
with a cross and had a shot save, both incidents a minute before the
interval.
It then took a good full-stretch save from De Gea to keep the ball out
after Sturridge and his marker challenged for a cross at the near post and
deflected it on target.
England, captained from midfield by ex-Chelsea man Michael Mancienne until
he was taken off on 67 minutes, couldn't maintain that flow of chances in
the second half as Spain enjoyed plenty of possession.

However a game that was fast slipping away from England was hauled back
when Man United's Danny Welbeck, possibly marginally offside, scored in
the 88th minute from a cross from Tottenham right-back Kyle Walker.
Sturridge tried to win it in stoppage time but his shot was saved. Given
the balance of play England must be pleased with a draw against the
tournament favourites.
They now play Ukraine on Wednesday who lost their first game 2-1 to Czech
Republic.

UNDER 21 CHAMPIONSHIPS: TWO GAMES, TWO DRAWS
Posted on: Wed 15 Jun 2011
Although he was not able to find the net, Daniel Sturridge was one of
England Under 21s' shining lights in a 0-0 draw against Ukraine on
Wednesday night. Ryan Bertrand also impressed.
The result was the second draw for the England side in the European
Championships in Denmark and although as in the first game against Spain,
they found chances hard to come by in the first half, in the second there
were signs that the attacking side of the game was coming together.
Stuart Pearce changed the shape of his side with Sturridge asked to attack
from off the wing as the man wide on the right in a 4-3-3.
At the back England are looking good, having only conceded one goal over
the course of the two games, and there was a sharp piece of defending from
Bertrand as early as the 12th minute when England goalkeeper Frank
Fielding could only push out a shot. The Chelsea left-back was quick off
the mark to get his body between the ball and a fast-following-up opponent.
It was a Ukraine side that had made five changes and lost their captain
but they were proving stubborn opposition.
On 32 minutes Sturridge came infield to take a pass from Mancienne and
struck a shot from over 30 yards out. The keeper was out of the equation
as it hammered against the crossbar and came back into play.
Shortly before half-time a difficult cross-field pass by Tottenham's Danny
Rose couldn't be taken down into Sturridge's stride when he was
counterattacking and in plenty of space. The last five minutes before the
interval were as good a spell of pressure as Pearce's side had managed so
far.
Sturridge had a cleanly hit direct free-kick from distance saved four
minutes after the restart. On 53 minutes his excellent pass put Man
United's Danny Welbeck through one-on-one with the Ukraine goalie but the
scorer of England's goal in the opening game scooped badly wide.
Fielding had to make a save on 67 minutes but it was a largely toothless
Ukraine in the second period. When they did attack down their right on 66
minutes they encountered another strong piece of defending from Bertrand.
It still took a good save with his leg from Fielding to keep out an
80th-minute Roman Zozulya shot when a spinning ball deceived Phil Jones.
Substitute Henri Lansbury went close to snatching it for England and it
took a full-stretch save from Ukraine keeper Anton Kanibolotskiy to tip a
Sturridge shot that was curling away around the post. The Chelsea man
again demonstrated quality shooting ability from outside the area.
The draw means England are third in their group behind Spain and Czech
Republic but a win on Sunday against the Czech side will put them into the
semi-finals.

LATE COMEBACK MEANS END FOR ENGLAND
Posted on: Sun 19 Jun 2011
Daniel Sturridge and Ryan Bertrand both started for England Under 21s on
Sunday night but a late Czech Republic comeback knocked them out of the
European Championships.
All three goals arrived in the second-half of the Group B qualifier,
following a promising display from England in the first period of
football. The Three Lions were minutes away from victory before Czech
Republic scored twice in the dying stages of the game, winning 2-1.
Sturridge had a hand in England's goal, crossing for Danny Welbeck to nod
home after 76 minutes of football. Then two late substitutes, Jan
Chramosta and Tomas Pekhart, who both came on in the 83rd, crushed
England's hopes of reaching the semi-finals.
An 89th minute equaliser came from Chramosta before a Pekhart strike deep
into injury time sealed victory for Czech Republic.
Stuart Pearce's side needed a win to progress to the last four; Czech
Republic only needed a draw to secure their place in semi-finals alongside
fellow Group-B qualifiers Spain. Czech Republic will now face Switzerland
on Wednesday; Spain will play Belarus.
Jack Cork was an unused substitute in the game but Sturridge and Bertrand
both played the full match.
