Having qualified very well, the Danes are expected to do well in the eight-team tournament but they took a while to get into their stride in what was the opening game in Prague. Indeed, the Czech Republic side took the lead 10 minutes before half-time, an excellent goal from highly rated right-back, Pavel Kaderabek who joined Bundesliga club Hoffenheim earlier in day. He was able to carry the ball infield and hammer home a curling shot before the defence was able to close enough. Demark were thankful to their goalkeeper Jakob Busk for being sharp with a succession of saves near the interval and ensuring the half-time deficit was not greater. Christensen, fresh from becoming a full international with two substitute appearances in the past fortnight, began in midfield but reverted to central defence after injury forced a substitution 25 minutes in. Tomas Kalas was unavailable for the Czechs as he was suspended for this game, as was their Eintracht Frankfurt striker Vaclav Kadlec. Although Czech no.9 Jan Kliment went close early in the second half, it was now a very different Danish performance. Their domination almost led to the lead being taken when Yussuf Poulsen powered through but his shot was saved. The winner came from the corner that followed. Joao Mario scored the only goal of the game after 57 minutes after reacting quickest inside the box to fire home a loose ball. Chalobah was deployed as one of the two deep-lying midfielders in a 4-2-3-1 formation, alongside Southampton's James Ward-Prowse, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek named as one of the substitutes. There is further Chelsea representation in the England set-up, of course, as Steve Holland is Gareth Southgate's assistant. Ward-Prowse had an early attempt on goal after working himself into space edge of the box but fired over, and moments later Nathan Redmond, the Norwich winger, should have done better from a good position but shot straight at Jose Sa. Jesse Lingard then went close with a long-range effort as England continued to look the more threatening of the sides. Jack Butland made a decent save just before the half-hour mark as Portugal looked to impose themselves in an attacking sense, while at the other end Harry Kane saw a fierce drive tipped around the post. England fell behind early in the second half when Mario finished from close range, and seven minutes later Chalobah had an attempt on goal blocked as Southgate's side looked to respond quickly. They continued to press for a leveller but were unable to find a way through, with both Kane and Danny Ings, who had replaced Lingard, going close late on. Loftus-Cheek remained an unused substitute. It was one of the 22-year-old's easier days at the office as his side dominated throughout, striker Jan Kliment grabbing the headlines with a hat-trick struck inside the hour. After their opening day defeat to Denmark, the win brings the Czechs back into contention in Group A, with their conquerors Denmark beaten on Saturday by tournament favourites Germany. Andreas Christensen was at the heart of the Danes' defence as they were beaten 3-0 in Prague, the Germans striking twice in five minutes after the break to put the game beyond Denmark. Centre-back Christensen played the entire 90 minutes. Today's results leave Germany on top of the group on four points with the Czechs and Danes behind them each on three from their two games.
