CHALOBAH LEADING THE WAY FOR ENGLAND
Posted on: Wed 29 Jun 2011
Captain Nathaniel Chalobah has helped England into the knockout rounds of
the Under 17s World Cup in Mexico.
The Chelsea youngster, who this year will become a first year scholar
having already become a reserve regular as a schoolboy, has been an
ever-present in the side's first three unbeaten matches.
Chalobah, 16, netted England's first goal in the 2-0 win against Uruguay
on Saturday, nodding home a corner on the stroke of half-time to confirm
their progression at the top of Group C.
They had earlier beaten Rwanda 2-0 in the first game and drawn with Canada
2-2 in the second, a game in which the Canadian goalkeeper scored from
inside his own half.
England now meet Argentina tomorrow for a place in the quarter-finals, and
Chalobah, the most experienced member of the side, will be hoping to set
them on their way as England look for a world title to match the Under 17
European title he helped win last summer.
'We have a good group of boys over here, obviously you have players from
different clubs and backgrounds but we know each other really well,'
Chalobah said.
'We have spent a lot of time together in the past and we all know each
other's strengths and we have a great team spirit. '
Also at the tournament is Lucas Piazon, the Brazilian who has signed a
pre-contract agreement to join Chelsea in January 2012.
The 17-year-old forward made a key contribution at the end of his
country's game against Ivory Coast, laying on an injury-time equaliser in
their 3-3 draw against Ivory Coast, in a game where he had opened the
scoring with a tidy finish.
Piazon has impressed so far in the tournament with his movement, touch and
team ethic, playing the full 90 minutes in the 1-0 win over Australia and
the first 80 of the 3-0 win over Denmark.
Brazil meet Ecuador today in their first knockout round game.

CHALOBAH SENDS ENGLAND THROUGH
Posted on: Fri 01 Jul 2011
Nathaniel Chalobah converted the decisive penalty in England's Under 17
World Cup first knockout round shootout victory over Argentina on Thursday
evening.
The Chelsea man, 16, who also captains the England side, stepped up to
take England's fifth penalty in Mexico, firing home to send his country
into the last eight following a 1-1 draw with the fancied Argentines.
England had started well in the game, with Chalobah stinging the
goalkeeper's hands with a powerful drive before Argentina went ahead in
wet conditions in Pachuca, but Liverpool's Raheem Sterling pulled England
level before the break.
Chalobah could have had a penalty when he was brought down inside the
area, only for the referee to wave play on, and so it went to spot kicks.
It was two-apiece after two before Argentina missed two in a row and
England one, allowing Chalobah to step up with England's fifth to send
them through to a quarter-final date with Germany on Monday.
Lucas Piazon, who will join Chelsea in January, played 85 minutes of
Brazil's 2-0 win over Ecuador on Wednesday, and they now meet Japan in the
quarter-finals on Sunday.
