Sweden were the team defeated, the final score 1-0 in what was the second group game for the two sides and it was a vital victory for Gareth Southgate's side, following on from a defeat by the same scoreline against Portugal in their opener. There was two changes to the England starting line-up to face the Swedes, Tottenham's Alex Pritchard in for James Ward-Prowse of Southampton and Derby's Will Hughes preferred to Man United winger Jesse Lindgard, so Chalobah started once again with Loftus-Cheek on the bench. He was introduced with 73 minutes played and the game still deadlocked at 0-0 and the 19-year-old earned praise from his coach for his impact. 'In the end it was Ruben who gave us an increase in pace from the middle, he had that freedom to go and play,' said Southgate. Lingard, who had been brought on early in the second half following an injury to Pritchard, settled the contest against opponents who had been hard to breakdown with five minutes left on the clock. He volleyed home after a corner had been cleared. The three points give England Under-21s, with our own Steve Holland assisting Southgate, a good chance of making the semi-finals having made their exit at the group stage in 2009 and 2011. Portugal lead the group with four points, one more than England and Sweden. Italy, England's next on Wednesday, are fourth with a single point. The Danes finished top of Group A after beating Serbia 2-0, and they will be joined in the last four by Germany, whose 1-1 draw with Czech Republic was enough to see them progress On an evening which began with all four teams in the group standing a chance of qualifying for the last four, Christensen started for Denmark for the third consecutive match, partnering captain Jannik Vestergaard in central defence. The Chelsea youngster began the tournament in midfield, but was moved back into a defensive role to cover for an injury after just 25 minutes of their opening game, the 2-1 win over Czech Republic. The young Three Lions began the game two points ahead of the Italians and with a place in the semi-finals in reach, but conceded two goals in three minutes shortly before half-an-hour was played and never realistically looked likely to recover. The final score was 3-1 with the England goal scored late on. As in the two previous group games, Chalobah was named in the starting line-up by Gareth Southgate and Loftus-Cheek on the bench. Everton defender John Stones was fit to play for the first time in the tournament having overcome concussion but Tottenham's Alex Pritchard was out due to an injury in the previous game.
