RESERVE REPORT: CHELSEA 2 WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS 3
Posted on: Mon 17 Oct 2011
=== Summary ===
Chelsea's reserves fell to a second straight defeat at home against Wolves
on Monday afternoon.
The Blues, featuring Romelu Lukaku in attack, fell behind early on despite
dominating possession against their more experienced opponents, and the
gap was soon doubled as Wolves demonstrated greater efficiency in the
final third.
Milan Lalkovic, back from a loan at Doncaster pulled a goal back for
Chelsea late in the first half but they switched off at the back again to
concede a third before the break, and although Lukaku drove a low shot
into the net in the second half, it was Wolves who finished the stronger
and were deserving of the three points.
=== Team News ===
Lukaku was making his reserve debut, as he is unavailable for Champions
League selection in midweek, and was joined in the line-up by Josh
McEachran who will have been keen for some competitive football.
Lalkovic returned from loan on the right wing and Sam Hutchinson continued
his comeback. There were returns to the side for Nathaniel Chalobah, Todd
Kane and Conor Clifford after international duty.
Wolves included a host of first-team faces including Jody Craddock, Ronald
Zubar and forward Sam Vokes.
=== First half ===
It took Lukaku only eight minutes to offer a glimpse of what he can do,
testing Wolves goalkeeper Aaron McCarey with a powerful 30-yard snapshot
that was palmed away.
A few minutes later the Belgian went down in the area under a challenge
from Craddock, but the referee allowed play to continue. It looked like
the right call, but the move preceding it, which had heavily involved
McEachran and Aliu 'Kaby' Djalo had been worthy of a higher stage.
It was some slack Chelsea play that sent Wolves went into the lead just
after the quarter-hour mark though when Chalobah conceded possession
inside his own half, and one lofted pass and a powerful drive from
left-back Jamie Reckord later, the net was bulging and the Blues were
trailing against the run of play.
Conor Clifford flashed a free-kick just wide in response, but it was
Wolves who would hit the game's second goal and double their lead before
the 30-minute mark, as Vokes slid home a left-sided cross from Ashley
Hemmings after escaping Hutchinson's attentions inside the box.

Chelsea reserves
Lukaku burst through at the other end but was tackled before he could
shoot, and then he did get a decision after being brought down by Zubar on
the edge of the box but Billy Clifford shot tamely.
McEachran brought a save from McCarey before teeing up Lalkovic, but the
Slovakian's narrow-angled shot clipped the woodwork before going over.
Chelsea were dominating possession though and earned a reward when
Lalkovic found himself in a similar position after a searching pass from
Hutchinson out to the left flank. Having beaten his man, the winger shot
a low, left-footed drive between McCarey and his near post to bring the
Blues back into the game before half-time.
Dermot Drummy's men were dealt a cruel blow though as Wolves went straight
up the other end to extend their lead once more, Reckord pulling back from
the bye-line for an unmarked Hemmings to volley home.
Rhys Taylor had to save from another Hemmings header right on the whistle,
leaving Chelsea plenty to think about at the break.
=== Second half ===
Chalobah was withdrawn at half-time, replaced by George Saville, who
played in an unfamiliar central defensive role.
Taylor had to be sharp to hold an Adlene Guedioura free-kick in the first
minute of the half, and then Lukaku almost pinched the ball of McCarey's
toe only for the Wolves man to recover well and clear his lines.
The Chelsea man would get the better of his opponent shortly afterwards
though, seizing on a loose ball inside the box and firing it hard inside
the near post. McCarey could only get a weak palm to the ball, helping it
into the corner of the net as Chelsea once more came within a goal of
parity.
The game was taking on an end to end complexion, and it looked likely
there would be more goals. Taylor toed a Liam McAlinden effort onto the
crossbar after the sub had outpaced Hutchinson, while Lukaku cut inside
but fired wastefully high and wide and Conor Clifford shot straight at the
keeper.

Chelsea reserves
When you would have expected Chelsea to really take control and force
their opponents onto the back foot, the Blues seemed to do the opposite
and it was Wolves who began to look as if they could kill the game off in
its closing stages.
Anthony Forde's cross hit Hemmings six yards out on the knee and looked
for a second like it might go in before Taylor pounced on it, and the
Chelsea keeper then produced a one-on-one save from McAlinden after Todd
Kane had erred and turned a Jack Price drive around the post to keep his
side in it.
Chelsea offered no further threat though despite the presence of second
forward Marko Mitrovic, and with the last kick of the game McAlinden
struck the Chelsea post with a long-range effort.
