The Young Generation: Year reviewed
Wed 1 Jul 2015
The official Chelsea website concludes our reflection on the Academy
campaign by sitting down to talk with Neil Bath, head of youth development
at the club.
Bath has just completed his 11th season in his current role and, despite
many achievements over that time, few campaigns have been as successful as
2014/15 when an FA Youth Cup and UEFA Youth League double was combined
with four first-team debuts for Academy graduates.
There were also competition victories at various schoolboy levels over the
past 12 months, and Bath considers the big picture in his assessment as
well as emphasising plans to improve still further.
'I think it's been a good year in terms of striking the balance,' he says.
'We've been very successful in terms of team play and winning trophies
but we've also had a number of debuts in the first team as well, which is
the ultimate aim of what we're trying to achieve.
'The first team supported this throughout the year with regular training
opportunities; practically every player in the Academy from Under-17s
upwards has trained with them at some point in the season and I know Jose
Mourinho and Michael Emenalo watch so many of our games. It's been a
fantastic year for the whole club so congratulations to the first team for
winning the Premier League and Capital One Cup.
'The commitment of our players, parents and staff has really hit home this
season as well. The boys who have been starting to get success in these
competitions and earn debuts have been with us for so long now. Of course
we say a huge well done to Adi Viveash [Under-21s manager], Joe Edwards
[Under-18s manager] and all their support staff for the success this
season but we must also appreciate that it's a team effort over 10 years
or more.
'We have to give a lot of credit to the coaches and staff who worked with
them along the way and also a special mention to the scouts who brought
them here in the first place. A huge proportion of this current group were
scouted from the London and South-East region from the age of nine or
younger and that's a great achievement for our local scouting network, and
for Jim Fraser who oversees the area.'
Nobody in the Academy wishes to stand still while savouring their success
so far, and Bath is confident more talented players are developing good
potential within the system.
'Our Under-12s were winners in their domestic tournament and the European
Christmas Truce Tournament and the Under-14s won the national tournament
at their age group too, before going on to finish as runners-up in an
international tournament,' he reports.
'The Under-15s and Under-16s were both runners-up in Premier League
national tournaments and we've won on a number of international tours.
'Clearly, we haven't just settled for one group that's been very, very
successful. Hopefully players will keep on coming through for years to
come.'
The bulk of Bath's work continues to centre on that ultimate aim of a
continuous stream of players for the first team. There has been progress
in this area but the complexity of moulding the perfect professional means
there is always a need to keep on improving.
'The ultimate is getting players ready for senior football. We know that a
high percentage of players experience loans before playing in the Premier
League, with a few perhaps jumping straight into the first team squad.
'It's so important that those who are now starting to break into senior
football realise they are still very much on the first step of the ladder
in their careers. My personal view is that you can't think you've made it
as a professional until you're reaching 100 starts in senior football at a
decent level, so we all know there's still much work to do.
'Some of our Academy players may have been at the club for 10 years now
but what we're learning is that realistically it's a 15-year project from
them signing as eight-year-olds to senior football. We're putting in all
the processes and planning required to take us forward so that we don't
stand still. In terms of our current success, we realise there's still a
lot to do and we have to plan to go again.'
