Arsenal took the lead midway through the first half in SW6 through Reiss Nelson before substitute Charlie Wakefield levelled after the restart. However, a late strike from Stephy Mavididi inflicted defeat on Adi Viveash's side for the second time in a week. The Blues came into the game on the back of consecutive 2-1 defeats and Viveash made five changes from the reverse at Reading four days previously. Nathan Baxter returned in goal, while Fikayo Tomori, Kyle Scott, Josimar Quintero and Isaac Christie-Davies all came into the side. Tomori joined Jake Clarke-Salter, Trevoh Chalobah and captain Jay Dasilva in defence, while Scott and Quintero acted as the central midfield pairing. Ike Ugbo continued to lead the line in attack supported by Christie-Davies, Mason Mount and Dujon Sterling. Dasilva, Mount and Chalobah continued their record of starting every league game this term. The visitors lined up with four of those who featured in the first team's EFL Cup tie earlier in the week, including midfielders Gedion Zelalem and Ainsley Maitland-Niles. Despite struggling with Chelsea’s early pressing, Arsenal carved out the game's first opportunity with just five minutes on the clock as Baxter denied Reiss Nelson with a smart stop. Viveash's side controlled the opening period though and threatened frequently with intricate attacking moves. Mount saw a shot saved comfortably by Matt Macey, the Gunners keeper, before the midfielder did well to cross from the byline but his delivery to Ugbo was snuffed out by Krystian Bielik. The deadlock was broken midway through the half and it came somewhat against the early run of play as Arsenal took the lead. Nelson advanced dangerously through the heart of the Blues defence and, after receiving the ball back from Chris Willock, placed a curling effort beyond the dive of Baxter into the far corner. The goal changed the balance of the contest as Baxter became the busier of the two stoppers for the remainder of the half. Gedion Zelalem twice tested our number one with attempts from the edge of the box before Stephy Mavididi fired narrowly wide following a right-sided corner. Viveash made changes at the break, introducing Charlie Wakefield and Jacob Maddox in attack, and Wakefield's impact was immediate as his pace caused problems for Marc Bola, the Arsenal left-back. He tested Macey with a rising drive from the right before the goalkeeper produced an even better stop to claw away his powerful header at the near post, which was destined for the top corner. Steve Gatting's side continued to create chances of their own. Nelson curled a free-kick narrowly over the crossbar before Baxter denied the forward a second goal with a crucial one-on-one save. The significance of that stop became more pronounced after 66 minutes as the hosts drew level. Quintero did well to regain possession on halfway and Mount set clear Ugbo in behind. Macey made contact to the striker's low drive but Wakefield was on hand following in to steer the ball into the back of the net for his first goal at this level. Just like in the first half, the goal changed the tide of the game and Tomori's header would have presented real problems for Macey had it not deflected away from danger. Quintero and then another Tomori header worked the visiting keeper before Maitland-Niles's deflected effort flew narrowly wide in a warning sign that the visitors could still steal the points. That warning proved true eight minutes from time as Arsenal struck a late winner. Another pass over the top caught the Blues out and Mavididi made no mistake with the opportunity, cutting inside to fire a powerful left-footed drive past Baxter at the near post. Bola hacked away Dasilva's dangerous cross from the left before Sterling's low shot was gathered comfortably as Arsenal held on to claim the victory. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- https://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2016/09/ pl2-reaction--tough-week.html PL2 reaction: Tough week Sat 24 Sep 2016 Our development squad suffered a 2-1 reverse in Premier League 2 for the second time in five days as they were beaten by Arsenal at Stamford Bridge last night (Friday). Having equalised in the second half after falling behind before the break, the Blues conceded eight minutes from time in SW6 to fall to a defeat. After the game, manager Adi Viveash offered an honest assessment of the evening's work. 'It's been a tough week,' he told the official Chelsea website. 'Some of these players won't have lost three games in a row in their career before so it shows the harsh realities of life at this level. You have to be at your maximum to win games with the young group we have and when you're not it becomes very difficult to get results. 'We were poor in the first half. We didn't play with enough energy or drive, our passing was slow and we gave the ball away in key areas. The back four were too deep so our midfield couldn't get compact and that's what happened with the first goal we conceded. We had to make changes at half-time, they gave us some life and Charlie Wakefield scored a good goal. 'Their only shot on target after the equaliser is the winning goal and it's another disappointing one to concede in the last 10 minutes again. We're pushing forward for the winner but the defence are very high again and we have to defend the situation better because we have three-versus-one.' The solutions to those problems can be found on the training ground, according to the manager, who has cited that work with his young group during the week this season will prove just as important as competitive matches. 'I was pleased with the second half performance but we're disappointed with the result of course. It's an unforgiving league and every game is physically demanding. We'll do some studying and keep on working. 'All we can do is dust ourselves down and get back out on the training pitch. We have a friendly next week against Sutton United's first team so that becomes an even bigger game for us now to get a quick response.' Meanwhile, our youth team return to action in the Under-18 Premier League this morning (Saturday) with a trip to Aston Villa.
