Under-18s report: Aston Villa 1 Chelsea 1
Sat 24 Sep 2016
Our youth team led at the break but had to settle for a point on the road
in the Under-18 Premier League this morning (Saturday).
The youngsters took the lead just before half-time thanks to a fierce
strike from Harvey St Clair but Jake Doyle-Hayes cancelled our advantage
16 minutes from time to ensure a share of the points.
Jody Morris made four changes from last weekend's win over Arsenal, with
Conor Gallagher, Tariq Uwakwe, Zech Medley and Jamie Cumming the returning
quartet. Uwakwe lined up alongside Luke McCormick in midfield, with
Gallagher, St Clair and Jacob Maddox supporting Martell Taylor-Crossdale
in attack.
Medley lined up alongside captain Josh Grant, Joseph Colley and Reece
James in a back four protecting Cumming in goal.
Villa striker Kelsey Mooney had the first opportunity of the morning,
bringing a routine save from Cumming with a header that lacked the power
or accuracy to trouble the goalkeeper. Chelsea's first sight at goal came
on the 15-minute mark as Uwakwe's dipping free-kick flew narrowly over the
bar before Maddox sliced wide when positioned well following a dangerous
delivery from St Clair.
Jordan Cox's strike deflected behind and then the hosts claimed for a
penalty as the ball appeared to strike Colley on his outstretched hand.
The referee waved away the appeals and the Blues almost went down the
other end to score, though St Clair could not manage to make contact with
Taylor-Crossdale's low cross after good work down the right from James.
McCormick saw a shot blocked and Maddox's drive was deflected behind as
the visitors upped the ante with the break approaching and they were
rewarded with the opener four minutes before the interval.
James swept a brilliant pass from right-back to St Clair on the left wing
and the Scotland youth international did the rest with a thundering shot
that flew past Viktor Johansson, the home goalkeeper. It was the wideman's
fifth goal in five youth team appearances so far this term.
The hosts regrouped at the break and returned to the field intent on
searching for a quick equaliser. Mooney tested Cumming as they enjoyed
more control of the game and they had the ball in the back of the net
after an hour. Mooney was the man wheeling away in celebration after
beating Cumming but his joy was shortlived as the linesman's raised flag
ruled offside.
Doyle-Hayes spurned a big chance as he sliced wide from the edge of the
box but the Irishman's regret did not last long as he levelled for the
home side with a heavily-deflected free-kick after 74 minutes.
Morris introduced attacking options in the form of Juan Castillo and
Charlie Brown but it was Villa with chances to steal all three points late
on as a substitute of their own, Jozef Pastorek, threatened. A quick break
following a wasteful Blues corner saw the Slovakian fire wide before he
blazed off-target in time added on.
The youngsters return to action in the Under-18 Premier League with a home
game against West Ham next weekend, live on Chelsea TV.

Under-18s reaction: Contrasting halves
Mon 26 Sep 2016
Our youth team remained in fourth place in the Under-18 Premier League
southern section table following a 1-1 draw at Aston Villa on Saturday.
The Blues led through Harvey St Clair's strike moments before the break
but were pegged back in the second half and had to settle for a share of
the points in the Midlands.
After the game, manager Jody Morris reflected on a varied performance.
'The old cliche of it being a game of two halves springs to mind,' he told
the official Chelsea website. 'We started well, controlled the game and
moved the ball quickly. I thought we followed the game plan quite well and
switched the ball quickly like we asked. We had the wind behind us in the
first half which aided some of the longer passes we were playing and
that's how we got the goal.
'Reece James played a fantastic diagonal pass out to Harvey and then he
scored a great individual goal. We needed that because even though some of
our build-up play was good, when we got to the final third we weren't too
much of a threat to their goal. We needed that bit of magic from Harvey
and he's capable of giving us that.'
It was a different story in the second half as Morris felt the changing of
ends hindered his side. However, he cited a need for an extra fighting
edge to be found from his players to grind out results in difficult
circumstances.
'Playing against the wind after half-time almost stifled us a little bit
and we struggled to play some of those longer passes that we did in the
first half,' the manager continued. 'The quality wasn't good enough and
our choice of pass was either the wrong one or didn't have the power or
accuracy.
'We were up against a team that wants to go and win headers and second
balls and I felt they dominated the second half by doing that ugly side of
the game well. We're in September when the pitches are still alright but
when the winter comes round we have to be able to mix with teams a little
better than we have.
'It's disappointing that we've had another away game where we've been in
front and in control but then something happened to change the rhythm of
the game. It just shows us there are plenty of things we need to do better
and work on.'
Our youth team return to action in the Under-18 Premier League this
Saturday 1 October when they host West Ham at Cobham. The Hammers are
second in the table and the game, which kicks off at 11.05am, will be
screened live on Chelsea TV.
