https://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2016/10/ under-18s-report--chelsea-v-west-ham.html Under-18s report: Chelsea 1 West Ham 0 Sat 1 Oct 2016 Our youth team made it 14 home league wins in a row with a hard-fought victory over West Ham at Cobham this morning (Saturday). Jody Morris's side dominated for long periods but struggled to break down a resilient rearguard to create significant opportunities. Ike Ugbo netted the only goal of the game after 16 minutes but it required a battling effort in the second half after Dujon Sterling was dismissed after an hour. However, the Blues held on to return to winning ways following a draw last time out. With three weeks between games for our development squad, there were maiden youth team appearances this season for Trevoh Chalobah, Mason Mount and Ugbo. The trio were joined in the starting side by fellow second-years Josh Grant, Cole Dasilva, Luke McCormick, Jacob Maddox and Harvey St Clair as Jody Morris's line-up hinted at what our FA Youth Cup side could look like this term. Chalobah and Grant formed the centre-back partnership protecting Jamie Cumming in goal, with Sterling and Dasilva operating at right-back and left-back respectively. The youngsters lined up with a diamond in midfield, McCormick at the base with Mount and Maddox more advanced and St Clair in behind strikers Ugbo and Martell Taylor-Crossdale. The Blues started well in the relentless Surrey rain as skipper Mount linked play effortlessly from midfield, regularly finding the runs in behind of St Clair, Ugbo and Taylor-Crossdale. The 17-year-old provided the first test for Sam Howes, the Hammers goalkeeper, who parried his fierce drive from the right away from danger before holding on to a strike that skimmed along the wet surface. It was no surprise to see Mount involved in the game's opening goal after a quarter of an hour. He quickened the tempo on halfway with a series of quick passes before St Clair supplied an incisive pass forward for Taylor-Crossdale. The striker looked to round the onrushing Howes, who slid in to dispossess him, however the loose ball fell kindly for Ugbo to sweep into an empty net. The hosts continued to enjoy the bulk of possession but struggled to break down the defence of a side that came into the game three points and two places above the Blues in the southern section. Mount fired over before Taylor-Crossdale's volley was well blocked and then the striker's flicked attempt was cleared to safety. West Ham's biggest threat came from set-pieces and Morris's side were forced to scramble clear a teasing free-kick after Ben Johnson had drawn a foul from Grant. The second period followed a similar theme but the elusive second goal could not be conjured. Taylor-Crossdale was inches away from bringing down St Clair's centre before Ugbo's effort at goal was comfortable for Howes. West Ham captain Tunji Akinola made a vital intervention to thwart the danger from Taylor-Crossdale but the balance of the game altered after the hour mark as the hosts were reduced to 10 men. Sterling was the man given his marching orders after two bookings in quick succession for dissent shown to the referee. However, we continued to create the better opportunities as the game progressed. Substitute Charlie Brown's deflected shot looped over the bar, while St Clair did have the ball in the back of the net after 70 minutes but the linesman's flag ruled it out for offside after a burst forward from defence from Chalobah. St Clair skewed a great chance wide from close range moments later before the visitors rallied in the final 10 minutes as they searched for an equaliser. Johnson found some space but fired high and wide, while Jahmal Hector-Ingram's only real sight in the game was snuffed out as he looked to test Cumming. A series of corners in stoppage time had Chelsea hearts in mouths, particularly when Grant challenged keeper Howes in the air at the front post. Yet our youngsters battled determinedly to claim all three points and leapfrog the Hammers into third in the league table, while extending their unbeaten home league record to 22 matches. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- https://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2016/10/ under-18s-reaction--capitalising-control.html Under-18s reaction: Capitalising control Mon 3 Oct 2016 Our youth team moved up to third in the Under-18 Premier League southern section table with a 1-0 victory over West Ham at the weekend. Jody Morris's youngsters were in command and led courtesy of Ike Ugbo's 16th-minute opener, before a red card shown to Dujon Sterling swung the balance of the contest. Afterwards, Morris reflected on three points won but highlighted areas for improvement throughout his experienced side, which consisted of nine second-years and just two first-year scholars. 'We had a huge share of possession in the first half which we should have used a lot better,' Morris told the official Chelsea website. 'It's one thing to have possession but we lacked urgency off the ball when we reached the final third, we didn't move the ball as quick as we should have and turned down opportunities to cross the ball. We had total control but we should have caused them a lot more problems and scored more goals. 'It was nice to come in 1-0 up at half-time and it was a good finish from Ike but we were a bit disappointed overall. We then started the second half a little slowly and lacked a bit of intensity with our press from the front, which has been quite good this year. 'The sending-off comes after an hour and that's something we'll have to look at because two yellow cards for dissent in the space of 10 seconds is just not acceptable.' Yet the manager was pleased with the reaction of his side when faced with a numerical disadvantage, as they battled on to record a 14th consecutive home league victory. The win also takes them to 22 games unbeaten at Cobham stretching back to April 2015, although Morris cautioned against getting carried away with such a record when the young Blues have yet to pick up a victory on their travels this term. 'We defended really well when our backs were against the wall. Josh Grant and Trevoh Chalobah were very good at centre-half, while Reece James came on to slot in at right-back and did well. 'It's a home record to be proud of because everybody wants their home pitch to be a bit of a fortress and to be difficult to beat. However, I'm also looking more at our away performances now and I'd certainly be a lot happier if we improved those as well.' The youngsters return to action on Saturday 15 October when Reading visit Cobham. Kick-off has been altered to the earlier time of 10.30am. Our development squad will be in Premier League 2 action the previous evening. They travel to Leicester City. Meanwhile, two Chelsea Academy youngsters have signed their first professional contracts at the club in recent weeks. Charlie Brown and Marcin Bulka, summer acquisitions from Ipswich Town and Poland respectively, have put pen to paper on deals that run until the summer of 2019.
