Checkatrade Trophy report: Chelsea 1 Oxford 1 (13-12 on pens)
Tue 8 Nov 2016
Our development squad were worthy winners in the Checkatrade Trophy this
evening (Tuesday) as they claimed a penalty shootout victory at Stamford
Bridge.
The senior side of League One Oxford United were the visitors to SW6,
searching for the point that would secure their progress to the knockout
round. The young Blues, who could not advance following two defeats away
at Swindon Town and Exeter City, were eager to impress and prove their
credentials against their experienced opponents.
Marco van Ginkel, starting as part of his injury comeback, struck the post
in the first period before Josimar Quintero netted a minute before the
break with a perfectly-positioned low shot inside the post. It looked like
Adi Viveash's side would hold on to a maiden three points in the
competition but Kane Hemmings netted an equaliser in stoppage time.
That forced a penalty shootout with a bonus group point up for grabs and,
34 spot-kicks later, the Blues were celebrating as goalkeeper Bradley
Collins scored and then saved to win the shootout for his side.
Viveash included Kurt Zouma, Ola Aina and Van Ginkel in his starting side
for the visit of the Us, with many of the development squad regulars
absent on international duty. Mason Mount and Ike Ugbo continued their
ever-present involvement in the team and were joined in attack by Van
Ginkel as the Blues utilised a 3-4-3 system.
Zouma joined Joseph Colley and captain Fankaty Dabo in a back three
protecting goalkeeper Collins. Reece James, on his development squad
debut, and Ola Aina lined up at right wing-back and left wing-back
respectively, with Quintero and Mukhtar Ali providing the protection in
central midfield.
The hosts were handed a promising opportunity to test Simon Eastwood in
the Oxford goal after just two minutes following a poor pass back by Aaron
Martin. Ugbo was alive to the chance and capitalised on the mistake,
weaving beyond two defenders as he advanced into the box before stumbling
at the crucial moment.
Down the other end, Collins did well to keep hold of Robert Hall's
left-footed effort across the face of goal, springing alertly to his left
to catch the ball as it flew through the air. Van Ginkel and Mount were
causing problems from their central attacking positions, with the latter
in particular drifting cleverly into space between the visiting defence
and midfield.
Van Ginkel twice fired at goal in the opening 30 minutes, slicing his
first effort following Aina's tee-up before unleashing a powerful drive
that flew wide and high into the Shed End. He went significantly closer
just after the half-hour mark. The advancing Aina once again threatened
down the left and the Dutchman turned his deflected low strike towards
goal, only to see the ball cannon away off the frame of the goal.
Oxford, wearing an all-yellow strip, continued to threaten themselves as
the half-time whistle approached. Collins gathered comfortably from Hall's
clever flick but the home goalkeeper was slightly more concerned as the
visitors put together their best move of the half down the right. Phil
Edwards, advancing from right-back, found Liam Sercome 12 yards out but
the midfielder scuffed the chance wide.
Quintero's strike handed us a half-time advantage that was well-deserved.
Ugbo held the ball up well and laid it back for the Ecuadorean to find the
bottom corner with a precise curling effort.
Sercombe and Chris Maguire fired narrowly over the bar either side of the
restart but it was Chelsea inches away from a second goal 12 minutes into
the second period. Aina laid the ball back for Mount to drive towards Van
Ginkel in the box and the midfielder's instinctive effort missed the post
only marginally.
Zouma made a crucial intervention inside his own 18-yard box to clear a
dangerous cross from substitute Marvin Johnson before the French defender
rose highest to head clear a teasing inswinging free-kick. In a period of
busy involvement for the 22-year-old, he took a blow to the face while
challenging for a ball in the air but was quickly back on his feet and
able to continue as we defended bravely in search of the victory.
In fact, it was the hosts who went closest to scoring the game's second
goal as Van Ginkel shot wide of the target before Aina, drifting infield,
arrowed a strike harmlessly past Eastwood's upright. Collins looked to
have secured the win with a brilliant stop late in stoppage time,
sprawling low and extending a hand to deny Wes Thomas clean through on
goal.
However, there was further late drama to come as Oxford levelled with
practically the final kick of the game, taking the contest to a penalty
shootout. Maguire escaped into space down the left and rolled a low cross
into Hemmings, who prodded past Collins despite looking suspiciously
offside.
As per competition regulations, the draw ensured a penalty shootout would
settle the encounter and it took 34 attempts from 12 yards to separate the
sides. Collins, who had missed the first time round, stepped up to score
and then saved to seal the bonus group point for the Blues.

Checkatrade Trophy reaction: New experiences
Wed 9 Nov 2016
Our development squad were involved in an entertaining evening of action
at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday as Oxford United visited SW6 in the
Checkatrade Trophy.
Adi Viveash's side knew before kick-off that they could not advance to the
knockout round but that did not hamper their desire to prove a point in
front of over 5,000 supporters. Josimar Quintero's goal a minute before
half-time looked to have sealed a win for the young Blues before Zane
Hemmings equalised in the fourth minute of stoppage time, albeit from a
clear offside position.
The stalemate forced a penalty shootout in which a bonus group point was
up for grabs and what followed in front of the Shed End was a truly
remarkable run of 34 penalty kicks, the most ever in an English
tournament. Bradley Collins, our goalkeeper, was the night's hero as he
scored from 12 yards before saving to secure the victory deep into sudden
death.
After the game, Viveash spoke about the merits of our involvement in the
senior competition for the first time and assessed the comeback of
defender Kurt Zouma, though he started by reflecting on the evening's
events.
'It's nice to finish with our best performance in the competition,' he
said, 'but it is disappointing that we didn't finish the game off earlier
because we should have won it in normal time.
'Oxford were good for periods and it's a credit to our boys that they
played such a strong side, with 10 regulars on the pitch at the end. We
worked tremendously hard to defend so well for so long and it's harsh on
us to concede a goal like that right at the end.
'When we went to the shootout, I was actually quite confident because most
of the boys have taken part in three UEFA Youth League shootouts in the
last couple of years. However, it's very different doing it in front of
200 people at Cobham compared to almost 6,000 at Stamford Bridge. The
Oxford fans were behind the goal and baying a little bit so it was great
in that sense for learning and development.'
The Blues were beaten by a one-goal margin away at both Swindon Town and
Exeter City earlier in the competition, though Viveash praised the
opportunity for his players to test themselves against the seasoned pros
of English football's lower leagues.
'It's been great for us as an Academy,' he continued. 'We've played a very
young team in the competition but we've acquitted ourselves extremely
well. We've learnt that you get punished for small mistakes at this level
and that concentration is such a key part of the game.
'In all three of our games, all we've found is support for the
competition. We've had three excellent matches that have all been quite
different so it's been a very worthwhile experience for us. A few of the
other development teams have progressed and we hope that one or two of
them can go far in the competition now.'
The night also saw a return to Stamford Bridge for Zouma, over nine months
since he suffered knee ligament damage on the same pitch in a Premier
League meeting with Manchester United. The 22-year-old had featured in two
previous Premier League 2 outings before the visit of Oxford, which
Viveash saw as another significant step in the Frenchman's rehabilitation.
'Kurt has been a privilege to work with,' Viveash praised ed. 'He's a
fine young player who works very hard every day and he's been tremendous
with the boys. It was a proper game for him and important that he came
through 90 minutes against first team players. He looked quick and strong,
was jumping up above the crossbar like he always does and his distribution
was good so he'll have felt the benefit of being involved.
'He's also been able to play on the right and in the middle of a back
three in the last couple of games he's been with us. I know he hasn't
played in that system much, as he spoke about before the game, so it's
been good for him in that sense as well to get some experience of playing
those roles.
'His next challenge is to get back into our first team defence, which is
performing extremely well at the minute, but what his return does is give
the manager another excellent option in his squad.'
