Under-18s report: Chelsea 3 Norwich 1
Sat 10 Dec 2016
Our Under-18s went four points clear at the top of the table with a
confident victory at Cobham this morning (Saturday).
First-half goals from Harvey St Clair and Conor Gallagher handed us a
healthy lead at the break before Tariq Uwakwe extended the advantage 20
minutes from time. Norwich bagged a consolation goal late on but it failed
to threaten the result as we ended the calendar year with a win in the
Under-18 Premier League.
Jody Morris made eight changes from the side that drew at Arsenal last
time out, with our development squad having played the previous evening
and Tuesday's FA Youth Cup third round tie also looming. Marc Guehi,
Gallagher and Martell Taylor-Crossdale were the trio to retain their
starting berths, the latter having netted his 13th league goal of the
campaign against the Gunners last week.
He led the line up front as the Blues reverted to a 4-3-3 variation with
St Clair and Callum Hudson-Odoi operating as widemen. Jamie Cumming
returned in goal protected by a back four of Reece James, Richard Nartey,
Marc Guehi and Cole Dasilva, while George McEachran and Uwakwe joined
Gallagher in midfield.
The Blues lost a nine-goal thriller when these sides met in Norfolk back
in September, a defeat since followed by an unbeaten run stretching into
double figures and there did not appear to be an undue threat in the
opening stages to that or our run without a home league defeat since April
2015.
Taylor-Crossdale was twice thwarted from getting on the end of crosses
into the box in the early period, while the striker was narrowly beaten
across the turf by Canaries keeper Fergal Hale-Brown as he looked to latch
on to Hudson-Odoi's forward ball in behind after 13 minutes.
Morris's men should have been ahead moments later, a Hudson-Odoi corner
from the left falling perfectly at the feet of Nartey, but the defender
skewed his close-range shot wide of the target. The closest Norwich came
in the first half was a strike from Anthony Spyrou fired into Cumming's
midriff from 20 yards.
McEachran blazed over and Taylor-Crossdale saw a free-kick deflect
narrowly wide before the league leaders broke the deadlock 10 minutes
before the break as St Clair placed his finish beyond the reach of the
goalkeeper and into the bottom right corner for his sixth of the campaign.
Uwakwe curled over Hale-Brown's crossbar before Taylor-Crossdale was
handed a great opportunity to double our advantage as he raced clear in
behind. However, the striker took his time and allowed Timi Odusina the
chance to recover and make a crucial last-ditch challenge.
It was 2-0 to Chelsea at half-time though as we took a healthy lead into
the interval. Gallagher picked up a loose ball 25 yards out and found the
same bottom corner as St Clair with another precise low finish.
Nartey had the ball in the back of the net after the restart with a super
volley at the back post but the strike was ruled out by the referee for a
foul in the box. Down the other end, Cumming was forced into his first
serious save of the game as he instinctively clawed Alan Fleming's header
away from its destination of the top corner.
St Clair fired over after a teasing cutback from the advancing James,
while Dasilva looked to have fashioned a great chance for himself with a
well-timed run to receive Hudson-Odoi's pass but his first touch saw the
ball escape him.
Uwakwe fired in a third goal with 20 minutes remaining, a powerful drive
that squirmed away from the goalkeeper's grasp and trickled over the line
to hand the midfielder his third goal of the season.
Substitute Juan Castillo then made a vital block on the line to deny Toby
Syme and seemingly keep our clean sheet intact, although the Canaries did
bag a consolation goal late on as Owen Wallis converted from close range
following a dangerous free-kick floated in to the back post.
Nevertheless, a fifth victory in six games rounded off another impressive
calendar year in the league for our youngsters. They begin another
campaign defending their FA Youth Cup crown next Tuesday 13 December when
they host Cardiff City at Aldershot in the third round, live on Chelsea
TV.
