https://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2016/12/ pl2-report--chelsea-v-man-united.html PL2 report: Chelsea 3 Man United 1 Fri 9 Dec 2016 Our development squad won their final league encounter of the calendar year to move fifth in the Premier League 2 table this evening (Friday). Manchester United, managed by their former midfielder Nicky Butt, took the lead early on as Axel Tuanzebe's header beat goalkeeper Bradley Collins, before the Blues responded with interest. Fikayo Tomori hit the post, Jay Dasilva saw a penalty saved and Dujon Sterling equalised all in the first half, before goals from Josimar Quintero and Jacob Maddox after the restart sealed all three points for the hosts. There were three changes from the Blues side that started last time out, a 2-1 victory over Feyenoord in our Premier League International Cup opener last week. Sterling was one of the trio to return as Adi Viveash reverted to a 3-4-2-1 system, with the 17-year-old and Dasilva operating as wing-backs. Fankaty Dabo, Trevoh Chalobah and Tomori lined up as the three centre-backs in front of goalkeeper Collins, while Ike Ugbo continued to lead the line up front after four goals in eight league starts. Kyle Scott, Quintero, Mason Mount and Marco van Ginkel started in midfield, the latter pair in the more advanced central positions. Both sides came into their final league outing of the calendar year having developed reputations as draw specialists, with 11 stalemates between them in 22 matches so far this term. However, it was a lively opening to proceedings on an unseasonably mild evening at Aldershot, which it was announced this week would remain the home of our development teams into the 2017/18 season. Scott and United's Sean Goss fired respective efforts wide in the first moments of the game before Regan Poole made a crucial block to deny Chalobah as the defender struck towards goal from the edge of the 18-yard box. United grew stronger as Sterling was forced to clear Matthew Olosunde's dangerous delivery before Collins fumbled a corner and was left relieved when he managed to knock the loose ball behind. However, the 19-year-old's relief did not last long as the visitors took the lead from the following corner. Goss's inswinging ball from the right caused problems and Tuanzebe arrived on cue to head the ball into the corner of the net. Our response was a positive one and Tomori came close to equalising with a low shot from 20 yards that thumped the far post and bounced away to safety. The Blues were level moments later and it was Sterling wheeling away in celebration after his second goal in as many games. Mount had found Ugbo with a clever forward pass and the striker did well to hold off a challenge and tee-up the supporting Sterling, who steered the ball beyond Kieron O'Hara with a deflected left-foot effort. There was an opportunity to edge ahead eight minutes before the interval as Matthew Willock's clumsy challenge sent Mount tumbling as he advanced into the box. The referee pointed to the spot without hesitation and Dasilva stepped up but was thwarted as O'Hara dived to his right and parried the ball away. Ugbo forced O'Hara into another save from the left and Quintero's curling strike flew narrowly wide before the hosts picked up from where they had left off after the restart and made it 2-1 after 52 minutes. A brilliant direct run down the left from Dasilva took several defenders out of the game before the wing-back pulled the ball back cleverly for Quintero, whose precise left-foot strike nestled into the bottom corner. Ugbo came within inches of converting Dabo's terrific cross but a minor deflection took the ball away from the striker's reach. The Blues came into the game having drawn more matches than any other side in the league in 2016/17 and so there was an understandably strong desire to see the game out. Following a frantic first half with chances down both ends, the second period was a tamer affair as Viveash urged his players to take care of possession and not risk being caught on the break. Neither goalkeeper was seriously tested until the final minute of the game when a series of Chelsea corners brought the game's fourth goal. United struggled to clear the danger and Maddox was the man on hand to spin and rifle a low finish into the corner to seal the points and extend our unbeaten run in all competitions to seven games. Our youngsters return to Aldershot as we begin our FA Youth Cup defence against Cardiff City next Tuesday 13 December. The young Blues have won the competition in each of the last three years. Before then, we host Norwich City at Cobham tomorrow (Saturday) in a game screened live on Chelsea TV. Kick-off is at 12.05pm. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- https://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2016/12/ pl2-reaction--halfway-highlight.html PL2 reaction: Halfway highlight Sat 10 Dec 2016 Our development squad once again came from behind to win last night as a 3-1 victory over Manchester United in Premier League 2 saw them rise into fifth place in the table. Goals from Dujon Sterling, Josimar Quintero and Jacob Maddox helped us secure all three points and manager Adi Viveash reflected afterwards on a performance that he ranked as one of the standouts of the campaign to date. 'It's always good to beat Man United because they are the champions at this level from the last two seasons and so they are a big scalp,' Viveash told the official Chelsea website. 'It was probably our best performance of the season considering the opposition and how they started the game. 'We were a bit concerned after 15 minutes because they matched up against us with their shape and we weren't expecting that but we made a couple of adjustments that changed things for us. I decided to start with Mason Mount a little deeper because we felt he could get us through their block quickly but we struggled to get him on the ball so we changed that and it seemed to spark us into life.' Mount's more advanced role played its part in our equaliser after half hour, with the midfielder's incisive forward pass releasing Ike Ugbo down the right channel. The striker held the ball up strongly before supplying Sterling to finish left-footed from close range. 'The technical element of the goals really pleased me,' Viveash continued. 'Mason's reverse pass for Dujon's goal was excellent and then Jay Dasilva's part in the second goal was sensational play, wriggling out of trouble to pick out Josimar. We deserved the third goal too but I was also pleased with how we defended at 2-1 because we did have a period where we started to lose possession and hand them momentum, which did concern me.' The result stretched our unbeaten record in all competitions to seven matches and rounded off our league campaign for 2016 in a positive, stylish fashion. 'It's a system that does enable us to score goals and we're actually unbeaten all season playing with three at the back. We defended well again, put in some really good blocks and tackles, and kept the ball in their half. 'It was an excellent win. It's been a really positive first half of the season in the league and to only have lost two games with the youthfulness of the side is a good achievement. It's true that we have drawn a lot of games but we have also been away to the top four already so I'm very pleased with the efforts of the players.' The development squad have two final matches this month before they pause for a Christmas break, hosting Dinamo Zagreb and then Swansea City in the Premier League International Cup.
