PL2 report: Leicester 0 Chelsea 4
Fri 13 Jan 2017
Our development squad recorded their first away win of the season after a
confident performance in Staffordshire this afternoon (Friday).
Goals either side of the half-time interval put Adi Viveash's in control
of the contest, with Mukhtar Ali's penalty handing us a lead at the break
before an own goal from Darnell Johnson made it 2-0 five minutes into the
second period. Leicester goalkeeper Max Bramley made a series of
impressive saves but he was beaten twice late on as Ali headed in his
second before Dominic Solanke fired in a fourth.
There was just one change to the starting side from last week's 2-2 draw
away at Tottenham, with Joseph Colley replacing Fankaty Dabo in the back
four. Dabo and Jay Dasilva, full-back regulars for our development side
this term, have completed maiden loan moves to Swindon Town and Charlton
Athletic this month.
Colley returned to partner Trevoh Chalobah at centre-back, with Fikayo
Tomori and Dujon Sterling completing the defence in front of goalkeeper
Bradley Collins. Ruben Sammut and Ali lined up in central midfield, with
Charlie Wakefield, Solanke and Mason Mount providing the attacking support
for Ike Ugbo. Mount and Ugbo continued their ever-present Premier League 2
record this season.
A minute's silence was held at the Football Association's national
football centre prior to kick-off in memory of the former England manager
Graham Taylor. Once the starting whistle had been sounded, the visitors
had early opportunities to break the deadlock within the first three
minutes.
Skipper Tomori's centre from the right just lacked a finishing touch from
Ugbo in the six-yard box, before strong calls for a penalty were waved
away by the officials. Ugbo advanced towards goal and successfully rounded
goalkeeper Bramley before he was bundled over by Johnson with the goal
gaping, however the referee was not interested despite the insistent
appeals.
Mount celebrated his 18th birthday earlier in the week and was handed a
decent opportunity to mark the occasion with a goal after Wakefield was
upended 25 yards out. The midfielder had netted a similar set-piece early
on at Spurs in our previous outing but failed to trouble Bramley with a
strike that flew off-target.
Before the contest, in this website's preview with Sammut, the Scotland
Under-21 international had warned of the Leicester threat from crosses and
set-pieces. The warning looked accurate as the hosts settled into the
encounter, with Solanke and then Sterling forced to demonstrate aerial
strength in their own 18-yard-box from a series of Leicester deliveries.
Viveash's side continued to search for an opener and Ugbo went close after
28 minutes with a low left-footed drive from outside the box that arrowed
narrowly wide of the far post. Solanke shot straight at Bramley after
collecting Mount's corner and fashioning an opportunity before the Blues
made it 1-0 eight minutes before the break.
Wakefield accelerated into space down the right flank and threaded a neat
pass forward for Ugbo to latch on to, with Bramley racing off his line to
meet the danger. Yet the striker was quicker across the turf and won the
foot race, knocking the ball past the keeper and taking the hit from him
to win a penalty for his side. Ali stepped up from 12 yards and planted
the ball emphatically into the top corner for his first league goal of the
season.
It was almost 2-0 moments later as the visitors carved Leicester's
rearguard open on the break. A quick turnover of possession saw Solanke
turn into space on halfway and slot a pass forward for Wakefield, who ran
clear in behind. With the goal looming large into vision, the winger
perhaps took too long to make up his mind and Bramley, closing the angle
all the time, made a save with the ball fired straight at him.
Mount's shot was blocked a minute after the restart before the Blues
doubled their advantage with 50 minutes on the clock. A good advantage was
played by the referee, allowing Wakefield to run into space and deliver a
cross into the box for Solanke. The centre did not reach the forward but
instead hit Johnson in the midriff and bounced into the net for an own
goal via the inside of the near post.
Leicester responded with two attack-minded substitutions and were inches
away from halving the deficit as Harvey Barnes volleyed narrowly wide of
Collins's upright. Down the other end, a back-pedalling Ugbo headed over
from Wakefield's centre before Solanke was denied by Bramley following a
neat exchange with Sterling.
Wakefield continued to cause problems for left-back Connor Wood, with both
the quality and frequency of his deliveries into the box remaining a
threat for the home defence. Ugbo headed wide from one right-sided centre
but it was the efforts of Bramley that kept the deficit at two for so
long.
The goalkeeper denied Mount and then Solanke, the latter having been found
by the former following another training ground corner routine that
allowed the striker to work space and fire towards the bottom corner with
a left-foot drive.
Clean sheets have been hard to come by for the Blues this term and Collins
needed to be at his best and most alert to preserve only our second
shutout of the campaign as Barnes advanced. The Blues stopper got down
smartly to his right to push the forward's effort behind for a corner.
Two further goals late on put a gloss on the scoreline for the visitors.
Ali headed in his second of the afternoon from close range following
another inviting cross from Wakefield before Solanke added a fourth,
beating two defenders coming inside from the left before rifling his
finish into the bottom corner.
The win extends our unbeaten run in the league to eight matches and keeps
Viveash's side in fourth place. The development squad return to league
action with a trip to Arsenal on Friday 27 January. Before then, our
table-topping youth team host Aston Villa at Cobham tomorrow (Saturday).
Kick-off is at 12.05pm and the contest is live on Chelsea TV.
Meanwhile, our young midfielder Juan Castillo has today put pen to paper
on a first professional contract at the club. The Dutchman has made a
dozen appearances for our Under-18s since his arrival from Ajax in the
summer.

PL2 reaction: Vibrant victory
Sat 14 Jan 2017
Our development squad stretched their unbeaten run in Premier League 2 to
eight matches after beating Leicester City 4-0 at St George's Park
yesterday afternoon (Friday).
A brace from Mukhtar Ali, the first from the penalty spot and the second a
close-range header, alongside an own goal and a strike from Dominic
Solanke helped the Blues to a first away win of the season. After the
game, manager Adi Viveash had words of praise for the performance of his
young side.
'I'm happy with the performance,' Viveash told the official Chelsea
website. 'Four points from the first two games of 2017, both away from
home, is a fantastic start to the new year.
'There was a real vibrancy about the team; we broke with extreme pace, got
into some really good positions and it could have been a lot more than
four because their goalkeeper made two world-class saves.'
The visitors were also aided by a first clean sheet since October, with
goalkeeper Bradley Collins preserving the shutout midway through the
second period with a crucial low save to deny Harvey Barnes.
'Clean sheets are not always the most important thing when you're
developing young defenders but there was a real steel throughout the whole
team, not just the back four, which was really pleasing,' continued the
manager.
'We've done a lot of defensive work in the last four days, as we have all
season, defending crosses and set-pieces. We've put quite a big emphasis
on it and the players have attacked the work because I think they knew it
was an area they could develop more as a group.
'The key moment for me was around the 20-minute mark. We had dominated
early on, should have had a penalty which wasn't given and were playing
some really good stuff but hadn't scored. Leicester then had four corners
in quick succession but we defended them really well. I told the boys
after that was an important moment.'
The transfer window reopening this month has seen development side
regulars Fankaty Dabo and Jay Dasilva complete loan moves to League One,
though Viveash believes the duo's departure has merely opened the window
of opportunity for others in his group.
'We're missing Kyle Scott and Josimar Quintero through injury, while
Fankaty has gone out on loan, but it's about taking your chances when they
come along. It was excellent from Mukhtar to score two goals and Charlie
Wakefield can be pleased with his performance because he put in some super
deliveries from the right.
'Losing Fankaty was the right move for him and it means we have another
Under-18 coming in to the side in Joseph Colley, who's played a bit at
this level but he's still not experienced. He did well and that culminated
in a strong performance.
'Dujon Sterling's defending was excellent against a very good winger when
he came on in the second half. That is development for Dujon because he
had problems last week at Tottenham against their wide player. Leicester's
winger was probably two years older but he didn't let him cross, used his
speed and got his body in well, which is great learning for him on the
left side of the back four.'
Academy action continues today (Saturday) as our table-topping youth team
host Aston Villa at Cobham in the Under-18 Premier League. Kick-off is at
12.05pm with Chelsea TV screening the action live. There will also be
updates throughout on our official Twitter @chelseafc .
