Under-18s report: Chelsea 0 Aston Villa 0
Sat 14 Jan 2017
Our youth team remain unbeaten in 13 Under-18 Premier League matches but
it was a frustrating day in front of goal for Jody Morris's side as they
were held at Cobham.
The Blues racked up a huge number of shots at goal and opportunities
against Aston Villa but a mixture of profligacy and misfortune saw them
drop points at home for the first time this season.
Jacob Maddox went closest with a drive that thumped the crossbar, with
late headers in each half from Martell Taylor-Crossdale and Reece James
missing the target. It is the first time in 18 matches this season that
the youngsters have failed to score.
Morris made four changes to the side that ran out comfortable 5-0 winners
away at Swansea City last time out. Jared Thompson replaced Jamie Cumming
in goal protected by a back three of Marc Guehi, Richard Nartey and
skipper Josh Grant.
The Blues continued with a 3-4-3 system as James, an ever-present in the
Under-18 Premier League this term, and Cola Dasilva lined up at right
wing-back and left wing-back respectively. Luke McCormick partnered the
returning Maddox in central midfield, while George McEachran and Callum
Hudson-Odoi supported striker Taylor-Crossdale up front.
Villa travelled south to Surrey at the end of a week in which they secured
a place in the fifth round of the FA Youth Cup following a penalty
shootout win away at Blackburn Rovers. Having won four of their last five
on the road in the league, the visitors were hopeful of causing problems
for the league leaders, although the driving winter rain made conditions
difficult for both sides early on.
Schoolboy forward Hudson-Odoi, impressive last week in south Wales,
threatened with his direct running past defenders although it took over 15
minutes for either side to register a shot on target. It was the
16-year-old with the effort, fashioned for himself after showing good
strength up against James Finnerty, but the low drive was fired straight
at Viktor Johansson and the Villa keeper was able to parry the ball away
from danger.
Finnerty had a chance in the opposite 18-yard-box midway through the half
but his header from Jack Clarke's free-kick was gathered comfortably by
Thompson. Much of our attacking threat was directed in wide areas and
deliveries into the box, though James could not quite get enough
meaningful contact on Dasilva's left-sided cross at the back post.
The clearest opportunity of the half fell to the home side's top
goalscorer moments before the break following an incisive counter-attack
from back to front. Grant had regained possession and Hudson-Odoi set the
move going with some neat footwork on halfway, before James delivered for
Taylor-Crossdale in the centre. The striker rose well to meet the cross in
the air but his downward header bounced up and over the crossbar.
Maddox fashioned two early opportunities in the second period but failed
to trouble Johansson as his first effort deflected behind and his second
flew narrowly wide of the upright. Morris made changes as the Blues
continued to dominate possession, with Harvey St Clair and Juan Castillo
introduced, the latter having signed a first professional contract at the
club this week.
However, chances continued to come and go for Morris's men as their
frustrations grew. McCormick’s drive from distance was saved routinely by
Johansson, while Maddox peppered the Swede's goal with strikes, the most
promising of which thumped the crossbar from almost 30 yards out.
Villa rarely broke into the final third and Thompson was little more than
a second-half spectator but the hosts struggled to find the clinical
finish at the end of their relentless attacking. St Clair's impact was
positive and he teed up James to deliver from the right but Hudson-Odoi's
header flew harmlessly over.
McEachran's chipped shot was too high, Hudson-Odoi spurned an opportunity
with a strike wide of the far post and St Clair struck over before the
Blues were reduced to 10 men when substitute Charlie Brown was stretchered
off injured after Morris had made all three of his swaps.
The numerical disadvantage did not dampen our push for the breakthrough
and, with seven minutes of time added on, Villa's goal remained under
siege. The visitors struggled to find an outlet higher up the field,
resulting in wave after wave of Chelsea pressure. Our best chance in the
dying moments fell to James, who rose to meet St Clair's delivery but saw
his header miss the far post by inches.
It capped a frustrating day for the hosts in front of goal as the
youngsters drew a blank for the first time this season. However, the Blues
remain top of the Under-18 Premier League south section with a two-point
advantage over second-placed Reading. We return to action in midweek with
a fourth round tie in the FA Youth Cup, away at Birmingham City on
Wednesday 18 January, live on Chelsea TV.
