https://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2017/01/ youth-cup-report--birmingham-v-chelsea.html Youth Cup report: Birmingham 0 Chelsea 5 Wed 18 Jan 2017 Our Under-18s booked a place in the fifth round of the FA Youth Cup after a comprehensive win in the Midlands this evening (Wednesday). Mason Mount was the man in the spotlight after netting an impressive hat-trick from midfield, while Cole Dasilva added a fourth just after the hour mark. Martell Taylor-Crossdale and Marc Guehi both hit the woodwork in quick succession as the visitors threatened to record a heavy score before Reece James made it 5-0 late on with a smart finish. It capped another impressive night in the Youth Cup for Jody Morris's young charges. They will now host Sheffield Wednesday in the last-16 this Monday 23 January at Aldershot Town. Kick-off is at 7.05pm and tickets can be purchased on the door priced at £3 for adults and £1 for concessions. Morris made six changes from the 5-0 win over Cardiff City in the last round. Goalkeeper Jamie Cumming replaced Jared Thompson in goal, while Guehi, Richard Nartey and Trevoh Chalobah lined up in defence as the Blues switched to a 3-4-3. Dujon Sterling and Dasilva operated in the wing-back roles and skipper Mount partnered Jacob Maddox in central midfield. Following a brace in round three, Ike Ugbo led the line up front supported by George McEachran and schoolboy Callum Hudson-Odoi. The holders threatened almost straight from the kick-off, signalling their intent to start on the front foot in the tie. Home keeper Adam Siviter parried away a teasing cross from the right within the opening minute before Hudson-Odoi skewed a strike wide after Ugbo had capitalised on a mistimed defensive clearance. Mount fired high and wide as Morris's men enjoyed the better of the early play before a lengthy stoppage halted the action as Birmingham's Leo Brown received treatment following a clash of heads. The wideman was knocked unconscious as a result and soon left the field, replaced by Jordan Clarke. The delay disrupted the head of steam that the visitors were trying to build but they restarted back in control. Hudson-Odoi saw a shot charged down on the edge of the box before Nartey showed good movement to get on the end of Mount's corner but headed over. Maximising the benefits of their 3-4-3 system, much of our attacking endeavours were directed down the flanks and Siviter helped his side by dealing well with a number of high crosses into the 18-yard box. Hudson-Odoi, on his Youth Cup debut, twice spurned promising sights at goal, the latter a strike on the half-volley following Guehi's headed knockdown that flew over the crossbar. Guehi glanced a header just wide as the Chelsea pressure grew before the breakthrough came eight minutes before the interval. Just as in round three and last term's final against Manchester City, it was Mount who opened the scoring. Picking the ball up 30 yards from goal, the midfielder advanced dangerously, twisting and turning beyond Louis Yuill before firing a rising left-footed drive into the roof of the net. Birmingham's short-term aim was to reach the break with the deficit intact at just one, though the visitors sensed the opportunity to extend their advantage. Dasilva fired a low cross in from the left that deflected into the side netting before Mount grabbed his and his team's second of the evening a minute into added time. The chance presented itself with a free-kick on the left flank and the 18-year-old hit a wicked curling ball into the near post that flew past the wall and beyond Siviter into the back of the net for his sixth goal of the season. Birmingham had barely threatened Cumming's goal and a two-goal lead was just reward for a half of sustained Chelsea pressure and countless chances created. The hosts made a half-time switch up top as they sought to find a route back into the tie but the pattern of play continued in the same fashion in the second period. Dasilva's effort narrowly went over the bar as he took aim at goal from 30 yards out before the defender made no mistake in directing the ball a few inches lower for his first goal of the season. An incisive counter-attack saw Maddox release Hudson-Odoi and the forward combined neatly with McEachran before rolling a teasing centre across the face of goal for Dasilva to finish at the back post. With the Birmingham resistance now firmly broken, the visitors were buoyant and they poured forward hunting further goals. Mount completed his hat-trick moments after the hour mark, capping a standout display from the skipper, as his sweet strike from outside of the area found the corner of the net despite Siviter getting a hand to the ball. It was the midfielder's final action of note and he was replaced by James. There could have been two quick-fire further goals as Martell Taylor-Crossdale hit the post with an acrobatic close-range attempt and Guehi struck the same upright two minutes later following Sterling's delivery. Maddox was twice denied and James curled an effort just wide before the substitute concluded the scoring five minutes from time, latching on to a loose ball in the box following good work from Harvey St Clair and steering the ball into the bottom right corner. An impressive performance was married with another emphatic result, a second 5-0 win in the Youth Cup this term and another clean sheet. The defence goes on against the Owls next week. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- https://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2017/01/ youth-cup-reaction--collective-control.html Youth Cup reaction: Collective control Thu 19 Jan 2017 Two games down, 10 goals scored and barely a shot at goal conceded, let alone a goal. The defence of our FA Youth Cup crown has begun perfectly for Jody Morris's side, who will host Sheffield Wednesday at Aldershot this Monday (23 January) following a 5-0 win at Birmingham City last night (Wednesday). A treble from Mason Mount alongside goals from Cole Dasilva and Reece James sent the holders back down the motorway content with another impressive evening's work and with a place in the last-16 secured. After the game at Solihull Moors, Morris reflected on his team's safe passage to the next round. 'I'm pleased,' he told the official Chelsea website. 'There were some really good individual performances throughout the team but collectively we dominated the game from start to finish. It was similar to our league game last weekend [a 0-0 home draw versus Aston Villa], only we ended up taking some of our chances. 'That was probably the only side of this game I was a little disappointed with because we could have got double figures if we had taken our chances properly, although you can't really moan too much after a 5-0 win!' The manager made six changes from our third-round win over Cardiff City and explained the rotation as a way of sharing experience among his squad. Callum Hudson-Odoi, Marc Guehi, Jamie Cumming, Richard Nartey and Cole Dasilva all made their Youth Cup debuts in Birmingham. 'I felt it was an opportunity for us to rotate a bit and to give a few of the players who've been performing so well for me on a Saturday the experience of a Youth Cup tie,' Morris said. 'You're going to have to use your squad in a competition like this, you never know what's around the corner and the boys who came in responded well.' The next round comes quickly into focus in five days' time, when the Blues can book a place in the quarter-finals for the eighth year in a row. Despite the short recovery and preparation time between the two games, Morris cited the advantages of keeping the group together. 'I've not known such a quick turnaround before but when it was suggested I saw the benefits of keeping the squad together for a longer period, particularly because we don't have a league game scheduled this weekend. It was the reason I brought Luke McCormick and Joseph Colley up with us as well because I wanted to keep everyone together, even if they weren't going to be involved.' The fifth round tie against Sheffield Wednesday takes place at Aldershot this Monday 23 January. Kick-off is at 7.05pm and tickets can be purchased on the door priced at £3 for adults and £1 for concessions.
