PL2 report: Southampton 0 Chelsea 0
Mon 6 Mar 2017
Our development squad picked up a very creditable point on the road as
they recorded a goalless draw at St Mary's against a Southampton side full
of first-team experience.
The visitors were disciplined and determined, keeping their shape well as
they surrendered possession to their more senior hosts. The best chance of
the game fell to Josh Sims in the first half, though Bradley Collins was
equal to it as he got down low to make an impressive save. Adi Viveash's
side had opportunities of their own but were ultimately content with a
result that leaves them fifth in the Premier League 2 table.
There were six changes from our last outing 10 days previously as Collins,
Josh Grant, Jacob Maddox, Kyle Scott, Ruben Sammut and Harvey St Clair all
returned to the side. Collins started in goal protected by a back four of
Dujon Sterling, Trevoh Chalobah, Richard Nartey and Grant.
Ike Ugbo continued to lead the line up front, the striker having netted
our solitary goal in the 4-1 defeat at Arsenal, supported by Mason Mount
in the number 10 midfield role and wide players St Clair and Maddox.
Sammut, a late replacement for Todd Kane after the defender was
sidelined prior to kick-off, partnered Kyle Scott in central midfield.
Southampton fielded a strong side with only two lacking first team
experience and four senior internationals. Their attack in particular
featured plenty of quality with Sofiane Boufal and Sims supporting Jay
Rodriguez, an exciting development challenge for a Blues back four who all
remain eligible for the FA Youth Cup.
Yet the visitors weren't daunted on the St Mary's stage and started with
intent, hassling the Saints in possession and working to break swiftly
using the pace of Maddox, Mount and St Clair. Scott fired the first effort
at goal at the end of one such move, though the shot flew harmlessly wide
of Mouez Hassen's upright.
Down the other end, Rodriguez was looking to add to his four Premier
League goals this term when he latched on to Jake Hesketh's slide-rule
pass but his low drive lacked the contact and subsequently the accuracy to
trouble Collins at the near post.
With both sides set up in a 4-2-3-1 system and well-matched in style and
approach, the early exchanges were highly tactical. St Clair advanced
promisingly from the left flank but was thwarted well before Sammut did
well to snuff out Sims's direct and mazy run into the box.
The most taxing Southampton save of the first period came around the
midway point as St Clair once again caused problems, his low shot diverted
behind by Hassen diving low to his right. Mount swung in the following
corner but Chalobah could not make clean contact in the air and Ugbo was
unable to force the ball over the line amidst the resulting goalmouth
scramble.
The Saints continued to probe but were met with a wall of blue shirts and
a well-drilled defensive unit. Sims fashioned an opportunity for Rodriguez
with a pass forward from the right but the striker blazed his effort high
over the crossbar before Collins kept the scores level with an impressive
stop six minutes before the break.
Chalobah's pass out of defence was intercepted intelligently and Harrison
Reed immediately sent the hosts on the attack with an inviting volleyed
pass for Sims. The young forward advanced towards goal from the right
channel and aimed his strike precisely across goal towards the bottom
corner, denied only by a crucial low hand from the goalkeeper.
The Blues could be happy with their first-half efforts and endeavoured to
continue in similar fashion after the restart. Maddox benefited from a
bouncing ball falling his way after a corner from the right was headed out
but the midfielder's low effort was diverted away from goal by an
outstretched leg.
A cagey contest was slowly opening up as the Saints, just a point above
the PL2 relegation places, knew the importance of three home points. They
fashioned a great chance on the hour mark as Sims skipped beyond Grant
down the right and pulled the ball back invitingly for Rodriguez, whose
path to goal was closed off superbly by the defenders. The rebound fell
kindly for Hesketh but he was leaning back and his strike flew over.
Sterling's direct running from right-back was starting to have more of an
influence on the contest and he went close to finding the breakthrough
moments after Hesketh's opportunity. The 17-year-old beat two defenders as
he powered into the box but his left-foot shot was fired straight at
Hassen, who gathered the ball at the second attempt with Ugbo lurking for
the rebound.
Southampton's influence grew as the game progressed through its final
quarter. The Blues were well-organised and hard-working but Collins's
workload was increasing steadily. The keeper parried away a drive from
substitute Tyreke Johnson at the near post before expertly clawing away
Reed's cross as it looped dangerously underneath his crossbar.
Viveash's men looked bright on the break but lacked a cutting-edge in the
final third, often missing a decisive pass or passing up an opportunity to
shoot at goal. Nevertheless, a point and a valuable learning experience on
the south coast capped a good evening's work.

PL2 reaction: Heart and hard work
Tue 7 Mar 2017
Our development squad picked up a point on the road as they held an
experienced Southampton side to a goalless draw at St Mary's last night
(Monday).
Adi Viveash fielded eight players still eligible for the FA Youth Cup this
term, while the Saints lined up with four senior internationals in their
ranks and nine players with some form of first team experience. The
mismatch was hardly noticeable as the visitors, well-organised and
hard-working, performed admirably to keep us fifth in the Premier League 2
table.
Afterwards, Viveash reflected on an impressive display in which his
players followed the pre-game instructions admirably.
'I'm very proud of how we performed,' he told the official Chelsea
website. 'We stuck to our game plan really well and worked incredibly
hard. We've had a tough couple of weeks but this was a good night for us.
Southampton huffed and puffed but our shape nullified them and they
struggled with that.
'We had to change a bit tactically, which we were planning to do even
before we knew how strong they were going to be, because we needed to look
at things a little differently after what happened in the last two games.
In terms of application and tactical understanding, in terms of taking
what we've worked on in training into the game, it was a phenomenal
performance and with a bit more belief and quality in the final third, we
might have won.'
Josh Grant and Harvey St Clair both made their first starts for the
development squad at left-back and left-wing respectively, while Richard
Nartey started for only the second time in a young Blues side. However,
Viveash felt they equipped themselves well in a difficult situation.
'There were some outstanding performances when you think of how many
players started who haven't really been involved before at this level,' he
continued. 'Josh up against Josh Sims was exceptional, marking him
one-versus-one after seeing how well he did against us at Cobham and
knowing that he's one of the best players in the league.
'Harvey made his first start and he worked tirelessly for the team, nearly
producing a moment of brilliance in the first half but the goalkeeper made
a really good save. Trevoh Chalobah was back to his best and Richard has
had some introduction to U23s football, playing against Danny Welbeck last
week and Jay Rodriguez this week.'
The manager also had words of praise for the older players in his group,
who helped to guide their younger teammates through the 90 minutes and to
a creditable away clean sheet.
'I have to give a special mention to the older players; Ruben Sammut came
in to the team 10 minutes before kick-off when Toddy Kane got injured in
the warm-up and he was fantastic alongside Kyle Scott in midfield, while
Brad Collins played one of his best games in the last three years in terms
of what was asked of him, how he organised and talked.
'He made a brilliant save from Sims in the first half and dealt with far
more crosses into the box than he's used to, almost like a first team
game. Southampton put in some brilliant deliveries with Sam McQueen's
quality on his left foot but Brad and the back four defended that very
well.'
The point keeps the Blues comfortable in fifth position ahead of upcoming
fixtures against third-placed Liverpool, Sunderland in sixth and league
leaders Everton.
'It's a brilliant point and stops those couple of defeats we've had in our
last two games. We know what's coming next with a difficult trip to
Liverpool the day before the Youth Cup semi-final but if we can show that
heart and the players coming into the group show that heart then we can't
ask for more than that.'
