A young Chelsea development side went down to defeat on Merseyside this
evening (Monday) in their penultimate away game of the season.
Liverpool netted a goal in each half as Harry Wilson converted from the
penalty spot and Trent Alexander-Arnold found the back of the net with a
free-kick at Prenton Park. The result leaves the Blues fifth in the PL2
table with three games of the campaign remaining.
Adi Viveash fielded four debutants from the start with several development
squad regulars missing out ahead of tomorrow evening's FA Youth Cup
semi-final at White Hart Lane. Cole Dasilva and schoolboy Jon Panzo lined
up at right-back and left-back respectively, joining Joseph Colley and
Richard Nartey in a back four protecting captain Bradley Collins in goal.
Martell Taylor-Crossdale remains the Under-18 Premier League's most
prolific marksman and the 17-year-old led the line up front supported by
fellow debutant Conor Gallagher and Isaac Christie-Davies. It was in
central midfield that the Blues were able to field the most experience as
Ruben Sammut joined Kyle Scott and Josimar Quintero.
Liverpool's line-up featured eight players with first team experience this
season. A strong backline consisted of Dejan Lovren, Joe Gomez and
Alexander-Arnold, while Sheyi Ojo and Marko Grujic were among their
attacking options.
The Blues had produced an impressive display last time out to record a
goalless draw against a strong Southampton side but this was an even
younger side up against a team sat third in the Premier League 2 table.
Nevertheless, the visitors started well and settled into the contest. A
neat attacking move fashioned a sight at goal for Gallagher but the chance
was quickly snuffed out.
Ojo fizzed a drive dangerously across the face of goal before Matthew
Virtue and Wilson combined well down the right, teeing up an opportunity
for the latter to fire across goal but narrowly wide of the far post.
Gallagher was settling well into his maiden runout and stole possession
high up the field before feeding the ball left to find the supporting
Quintero. The Ecuadorean was quickly closed down as he advanced towards
goal and his low strike was blocked behind by Gomez before it could
trouble Caoimhin Kelleher in the Reds goal.
Nartey blocked bravely from former Chelsea Academy youngster Rhian
Brewster but the hosts found the decisive breakthrough midway through the
opening period. Alexander-Arnold provided the attacking overlap down the
right flank and jinked into the box before going to ground over Sammut's
outstretched leg. The referee pointed to the spot and Wilson made no
mistake with a firm and precise effort into the bottom right corner.
It would be a testing 20 minutes heading into the interval but Viveash's
side continued to work hard and keep their shape out of possession.
Brewster had the two only other chances of the first half, firing over at
the near post shortly after the goal before failing to adjust his body in
time as Alexander-Armold's cross was swung in from the right. Down the
other end, a promising Blues break was scuppered as Quintero's pass for
Taylor-Crossdale was too heavy to find the striker's run.
Alexander-Arnold fired across the face of goal shortly after the restart
but the visitors still harboured hopes of finding an equaliser. Scott
might have pulled the trigger earlier as he drifted towards goal from left
to right but could not get his shot away to provide the first test of the
evening for Kelleher.
Collins saved comfortably from a Brewster header on the end of a high
cross from the left and Sammut read the danger intelligently to clear
Alexander-Arnold's dangerous cutback from the byline as the Blues
continued to defend with a maturity and confidence that belied the gulf in
experience between the sides.
Brewster ought to have done better with a front-post header that flew wide
after Ojo had delivered dangerously before Liverpool doubled their
advantage with 16 minutes remaining courtesy of another set-piece,
Alexander-Arnold beating Collins with a free-kick from 25 yards out that
dipped into the bottom corner.
The hosts could have added a third but for an excellent clearance
underneath his own crossbar by Nartey, while Wilson fired against the
crossbar late on with Collins seemingly beaten. Yet with half a dozen
debutants and eight Under-18s involved over the 90 minutes, this was an
evening where development took centre stage over points and Viveash could
be pleased with the effort and lessons learned by his young but gutsy side.
Forthcoming Academy action takes the shape of a two-legged FA Youth Cup
semi-final tie against Tottenham Hotspur this week. The first encounter
takes place tomorrow (Tuesday) at White Hart Lane, kick-off 7.15pm, before
the Stamford Bridge return this Saturday 18 March at 5.15pm. Both games
will be screened live on Chelsea TV, while tickets for the SW6 encounter
can still be purchased online.
