An encounter blessed with attacking talent and brimming with chances, Jody Morris's side struck first through Ike Ugbo's close-range finish a minute before half-time. There had been plenty of goalmouth action preceding the opener, with both sides striking the woodwork, the Blues through Callum Hudson-Odoi. Yet Phil Foden's low drive after an hour drew the challengers level and leaves the final intriguingly poised ahead of next week's second leg at Stamford Bridge. Morris made two changes from the previous round as Marc Guehi and Hudson-Odoi replaced Josh Grant and George McEachran, with the Blues line-up containing 10 England youth internationals and four starters from the final first-leg last term, also in Manchester against the same opponents. Both sides opened rather nervously on the big occasion, with the sound of pre-match pyrotechnics and the home support's brass band ringing in their ears. The respective teams came into the tie with a combined 199 goals between them in all Under-18 competitions this term but it took almost 10 minutes for the first strike at goal to be registered, Hudson-Odoi's effort from just inside the box tipped behind by Arijanet Muric, the City goalkeeper. An evident ploy for the visitors was to press the ball high up the field, knowing that City would play out from the goalkeeper into defence. Juan Castillo turned the ball over but Ugbo's shot was blocked before Hudson-Odoi saw a cross cleared as Morris's men grew into the ascendancy. Lee Carsley's side took aim at goal for the first time with 20 minutes on the clock as the Spaniard Brahim Diaz fired narrowly wide of the far post with a well-struck effort but it was the holders creating the clearer, more frequent opportunities as the half progressed. Hudson-Odoi and skipper Mount were combining neatly and to dangerous effect but there was nobody on the end of the latter's cutback before Dujon Sterling's advance from the right flank resulted in just a tame shot collected by Muric. The final 15 minutes of the half saw chances for both finalists to strike the first blow in the contest. Jacob Maddox did well to recover and dispossess Lukas Nmecha as the striker advanced towards goal before Mount and then Hudson-Odoi forced the City goalkeeper into routine work in his six-yard box. The hosts had the first big chance to establish an advantage as Diaz's forward pass found the run of Nmecha in behind the Blues defence but the City number nine couldn't squeeze his effort inside the far post with Jared Thompson beaten. Morris had urged his young charges to be ruthless in their pursuit of a fourth consecutive Youth Cup triumph but he was left ruing more missed opportunities as Hudson-Odoi went close on three occasions in quick succession, the closest a bending effort that clipped the upright. Nmecha was also guilty of profligacy in front of goal, unusual for the competition's leading marksman, skipping past Trevoh Chalobah and into space but firing left-footed and high over the crossbar. Mount saw a low strike spilled by Muric but there were no Chelsea players waiting to pounce, unlike moments later when the Blues took the lead just before half-time. Hudson-Odoi, still a schoolboy despite featuring in all but one of our Youth Cup ties this campaign, was at the centre of the trouble-making once again, moving past Foden and Sadou Diallo before Muric pushed his effort on to the post. However, the 16-year-old showed composure beyond his years to gather the ball and tee up Ugbo, who lashed the ball into the back of the net from eight yards for his ninth goal in the competition. The home side might have equalised immediately as Diaz's dazzling run beat several defenders but he was eventually smothered into a standstill as he moved into the box, while Jadon Sancho rolled a great chance wide, with Ugbo almost lobbing Muric in between. The whistle came at an ideal time for the visitors and allowed Morris to settle his side, the end-to-end nature of the tie not particularly suiting a team now with an away lead. They continued to dominate chances created after the restart as Sterling shot too high from the right and then Muric patted away a drive from Mount after the captain advanced unchallenged. It was panning out ideally for us and with an hour on the clock we had taken the sting out of the game well. Mount dragged another shot comfortably wide but after 62 minutes the hosts restored parity with an equaliser out of the blue. Sterling lost possession on the right to Foden and the midfielder advanced into the box before beating Thompson with an accomplished low finish, only the third goal conceded by the holders in this Cup campaign. The final half-hour was evenly poised. Hudson-Odoi remained a bright spark but missed the target following Mount's pass and our number eight was then thwarted by a functional wall, the leaping defenders deflecting his promising free-kick away from danger. City grew stronger but failed to breach a well-organised Chelsea defence, with Chalobah marshalling and repelling with authority. It ended as it did 12 months previously, a pair of goals equally shared in the North-West and an intriguing battle in SW6 ahead. The spoils were shared in the 90 minutes of the first leg at Manchester City's Academy Stadium, with the home team's Phil Foden levelling the tie in the second half after the young Blues' centre-forward Ike Ugbo had netted his ninth goal in this cup campaign shortly before half-time. After the match ended 1-1, our Under-18s manager Jody Morris gave the official Chelsea website his verdict on the game. 'I was really pleased with the performance attacking-wise,' Morris said. 'I felt we played some lovely stuff, especially in the first half. We opened Man City up numerous times with some real quality. The defensive side of our game I was a little disappointed with, especially in the first half when I felt when the ball turned over we had some people who were day-dreaming and not really at it. 'City had two clear-cut chances in the first half which were from our lapses of concentration. We looked more solid in the second half but saying that, the goal we gifted them was not good. It was a real blow to concede a goal like that once we said to tighten up at half-time and we had looked more solid. 'We have looked very solid defensively in this cup run but when you are coming up against the front three Man City have, you have to be right at it and fully concentrated. If you want to go on and play at the top level, you have to concentrate all the time, even when you are in possession and I felt that is something we did not really do in the first half.' Morris continued to contrast the two halves of the game and considered the fact we let our opponents draw level when we appeared in control. 'We could have kept the ball a little better in the second half, especially when we started to get a bit tired. There were passages in the first half when we did that really well. We took the sting out of City's press. They want to press high but we went round them and sometimes through them quite well in the first half, but the second half we had to protect it a little longer and give us a little bit of rest on the ball. But it is all about game management and all about the boys learning.' With there being no 'away goals rule' in the FA Youth Cup, the second leg starts with the two teams neck-and-neck, albeit Chelsea with home advantage. 'The match is at Stamford Bridge and we have not lost a Youth Cup game there in a while,' noted Morris. 'It is somewhere we are confident playing and we have performed well there already in the competition this season. If Man City are going to come and take the trophy from us, they will have to be at their best. 'Like in most cup competitions, it will be decided by who takes their chances and who out of the top players turn up on the night.'
