Under-18s report: Liverpool 0 Chelsea 1
Sat 29 Apr 2017
Tariq Uwakwe's deflected early strike was all that separated two
evenly-matched sides as Chelsea beat Liverpool by a single goal. The Blues
produced a mature performance to hold on to the lead against determined
opponents and keep the destination of the Under-18 Premier League title in
our own hands.
Jody Morris fielded a strong side, with seven players who featured in our
FA Youth Cup final second-leg victory over Manchester City on Wednesday
evening in the starting line-up here, albeit with Tariq Uwakwe moving
further forward into the front three and Dujon Sterling shifting to the
central position in the defence.
That paid off early as it was Uwakwe who opened the scoring just five
minutes in. When Liverpool stood off and allowed him to carry the ball
forward, Uwakwe took the invitation to unleash a powerful low drive from
range, which was helped past goalkeeper Kamil Grabara by a deflection off
defender Conor Masterson.
The lead looked like it had been extended almost immediately when Ike Ugbo
poked the ball into the net after a Chelsea corner resulted in a scramble
in the six-yard box, but it was disallowed as our skipper finished from an
offside position.
Uwakwe went close to a second as the game approached the 20-minute mark,
an improvised hooked half-volley looping just wide after Juan Castillo had
headed Cole Dasilva's deep cross back into the centre.
Liverpool tried to pose a threat on the counter in the face of relentless
Chelsea pressure, Bobby Adekanye providing a warning as he fired wide
after finding space just inside the box following a slip by Castillo.
As the half wore on, the hosts started to see a larger share of the ball,
Chelsea goalkeeper Jared Thompson getting down to his right brilliantly to
hold a seemingly goal-bound effort from Liam Miller.
Uwakwe again came close to his second goal straight afterwards. Harvey St
Clair drove forward and tried his luck from range in a carbon copy of
Uwakwe's earlier goal. This time Grabara got to it, but looked
unconvincing in palming the ball back into danger. Unfortunately for
Uwakwe, the Chelsea forward couldn't adjust his feet quickly enough upon
reaching the rebound to keep his shot away from the keeper.
Uwakwe clearly had an eye for goal by this point, with another effort from
just outside the box going narrowly wide of the near post after cutting in
from the right wing onto his left foot.
Grabara finished the half by far the busier of the keepers, having to save
another low drive from St Clair, and as half-time approached the pressure
of Chelsea's possession started to take it's toll on the home side,
Masterson and Adekanye both receiving yellow cards for frustrated
challenges.
There was a couple of scares early on in the second half as Liverpool
tried to put the Blues back line under pressure. First Adam Lewis drew a
save from Thompson with a free-kick on the edge of the box, following a
trip from Castillo on Adekanye, and then Dujon Sterling could count
himself fortunate not to concede a penalty for his challenge on Okera
Simmonds.
Morris responded to the increased pressure from the Reds by brining on
Martell Taylor-Crossdale to play alongside Ugbo in attack, and the
substitute nearly made an instant impact as he forced a save from Grabara
after turning his marker in the box.
There was action at both ends, with the best chance falling to Adekanye,
as the roles reversed and Liverpool enjoyed the majority of possession
while Chelsea threatened on the break.
As the game entered the last 10 minutes we twice came close to extending
our lead with quick attacks, Dasilva forcing a save from Grabara at the
end of a mazing solo run and Jacob Maddox curling just wide from the edge
of the area. Substitute Luke McCormick went closest, smashing a
half-volley towards the top corner after a free-kick into the box was only
partially cleared, but Grabara was equal to it and tipped the ball around
the post.
Neither team could find a goal in the closing stages, as the Chelsea
defence held strong against a late Liverpool push for an equaliser. That
means we keep our place at the top of the Under-18 Premier League table,
ensuring if we win our two remaining fixtures, against Arsenal and
Reading, we will be crowned champions regardless of other results.
