Checkatrade Trophy report: Yeovil 1 Chelsea 1 (5-3 on pens)
Wed 25 Oct 2017
Our development squad came from behind to earn a draw at Huish Park in the
Checkatrade Trophy this evening (Wednesday).
The Blues competed manfully against their League Two opponents, belying
the difference in age and experience as they sought to build on a point
gained at Plymouth Argyle back in August. They fell behind midway through
the first half as Rhys Browne turned in a corner but fought back to level
through Luke McCormick's instinctive finish on the rebound following
Martell Taylor-Crossdale's saved shot.
The second period was a similarly competitive encounter as chances were
fashioned down both ends, the best for the visitors coming when
Taylor-Crossdale forced a low save from the home keeper. Jamie Cumming,
guarding goal for Joe Edwards's side, made a few impressive stops to
preserve the point but could do nothing in the shootout as Yeovil scored
five from five and collected a bonus point in Southern Group D.
Edwards made four changes from Sunday's 0-0 PL2 draw against West Ham as
two used substitutes three days previously, Kylian Hazard and McCormick,
came into the team along with Richard Nartey and Taylor-Crossdale.
With Ethan Ampadu starting and Dujon Sterling on the bench 120 miles away
at Stamford Bridge, there was a reshuffle of the defensive ranks as
Edwards lined up with Nartey, Trevoh Chalobah and Joseph Colley in central
defence, flanked by wing-backs Reece James and Josh Grant.
Captain Ruben Sammut began alongside Jacob Maddox and McCormick across the
middle of the field with Hazard in behind central striker Taylor-Crossdale.
Five youngsters eligible for this age group – Callum Hudson-Odoi, George
McEachran, Marc Guehi, Jon Panzo and Conor Gallagher – remain away with
England at the Under-17 World Cup in India. The young Lions beat Brazil
3-1 earlier in the day to set up a meeting with Spain in the final this
weekend.
The Blues had surrendered a two-goal lead late on against Plymouth in
their opening Checkatrade Trophy group game before losing the bonus point
penalty shootout and arrived in Somerset still seeking their first three
points in this competition since its revamp to include development teams
last season.
They settled quickly and comfortably on the ball, while the first testing
deliveries long into their 18-yard box were dealt with well by the central
defensive trio. It took almost 15 minutes for the hosts to fashion the
game's first effort of note, Tom James trying his luck with a volley from
distance that dropped harmlessly over the crossbar.
Otis Khan, joint-top scorer for the Glovers this term, then flashed a
well-struck free-kick narrowly wide before Bevis Mugabi's header landed
just off-target as Darren Way's side gathered momentum.
The League Two side broke the deadlock midway through the first period as
another set-piece did the damage to our youngsters. Khan swung in a corner
from the right and Sam Surridge headed towards goal before Browne got a
crucial touch to divert the ball into the bottom corner, beyond the grasp
of Cumming.
Yeovil remained in control and Artur Krysiak, their goalkeeper, remained
untroubled for a spell following the opener as the Blues looked to quickly
compose themselves after the early disappointment. Better than that, they
restored parity 11 minutes before the break with their first effort at
goal of the evening.
The ball was worked purposefully to James on the right flank and his low
cross met by Taylor-Crossdale from close range. Although the striker's
shot was kept out with an impressive stop from Krysiak, the Pole could
only watch from the floor as McCormick reacted quickest to poke the ball
into an unguarded net from a narrowing angle.
Buoyed by the leveller, Chelsea enjoyed their brightest period of the game
and might have grabbed the lead before half-time. The home side
surrendered possession dangerously in their own defensive third and Maddox
advanced, reaching the edge of the box before curling a strike low towards
the bottom right corner. Krysiak, well-positioned on his line, tipped the
effort behind and the referee signalled for the break before the corner
could be delivered.
Edwards's side had demonstrated hard work and application throughout the
first 45 minutes, though their experience from Home Park in their last
Checkatrade Trophy outing provided a stark reminder that there was still
plenty of effort still to be exerted.
Chalobah made a crucial interception in the box shortly after the restart,
while Reece James had the first shot of the second period with a rising
drive that had too much height to trouble Krysiak. Down the other end,
Browne latched on to an inswinging delivery from Tom James and spun to
fire at goal, his attempt also flying narrowly over.
Taylor-Crossdale found himself with a presentable opportunity after an
hour, accelerating down the left and cutting inside to shoot at goal but
Krysiak was able to keep hold of the striker's deflected low effort and
keep the score at 1-1.
The contest continued to allow for chances for both sides and Chalobah won
a big header under his own crossbar after Colley had headed the ball from
Cumming's hands. Edwards introduced Harvey St Clair to add a direct and
speedy threat to his attack just after the hour mark, the forward warming
his shooting boots with a shot wide from 25 yards shortly after his
introduction.
The visitors were indebted to an impressive save from their teenage
goalkeeper as the game headed towards its conclusion, Cumming flying to
his left to deny Jake Gray and push the ball behind. Mugabi, regularly an
aerial threat from set-pieces, met Khan's delivery from the resulting
corner and saw his header clip the top of the bar.
Physically tiring against senior opposition, Yeovil grew into the
ascendancy and continued to carve out chances to steal the group points.
Cumming was stood in their way again when Khan tried at goal from the edge
of the box, the keeper diving low to his right to gather, before saving
from the same man in added time after a mazy run from the winger.
Just as in Plymouth, a penalty shootout concluded proceedings with a bonus
group point available for the winners. McCormick missed the first
spot-kick and Yeovil were flawless from 12 yards, leaving the young Blues
two points behind second-place Plymouth ahead of the final game away at
Exeter City.

Checkatrade Trophy reaction: Spirit in Somerset
Thu 26 Oct 2017
Our development squad made it two unbeaten games from two in the
Checkatrade Trophy as they came from behind to draw 1-1 against Yeovil
Town at Huish Park on Wednesday night.
Midfielder Luke McCormick's fifth goal of the season levelled the score
and earned a point for Joe Edwards's side in Southern Group D, although
the hosts claimed the additional group point after winning the penalty
shootout.
Afterwards, Edwards had words of praise for the character and personality
on display from his youngsters against senior opponents from League Two.
'A big word for us tonight was spirit,' the manager told the official
Chelsea website. 'We knew it wasn't going to be one of those nights where
we dominated, controlled the game and played a lot of attractive football.
'We came to play against a good Yeovil side who you can see are taking
this competition seriously so we had a lot of defending to do and had to
answer lots of questions that aren't asked as frequently in our normal
programme.
'I felt right from the start that the lads stepped up to that challenge
and man for man everyone put in an excellent shift. We defended the box
really well, bar their goal which came from a set-piece and was
disappointing to concede; we competed well and earned the right to play.'
The young Blues have not won since August and so could be forgiven for
lacking confidence, though their manager was pleased with their execution
of the game plan and a desire to keep pushing for a winner right until the
final whistle.
'If you look at the make-up of our team at the moment we've got a lot of
defensive-minded players but not many creative, attacking front players so
we set up to be solid and our main plan was to nullify the direct threat,
energy and aggression of Yeovil by making sure that we kept the ball,'
Edwards continued.
'That wasn't always easy; we had to deal with the physical side of the
game which is always going to be a little different to what our boys are
used to and the second half was a big shift. You could see the power of
Yeovil all over the pitch and some of our players were dominated
physically but then it's about us showing mentality.
'We didn't have many chances before they scored so to go 1-0 down and then
come back was pleasing and gave us some belief. It looked like we were
hanging on in the last 10 minutes but then we went again and were in their
box and pushing for a winner ourselves in stoppage time. That showed great
character and belief from the lads and it's something we've really got to
build on.'
The state of play in the group sees both Yeovil and Plymouth Argyle above
the Blues on five and four points respectively, with only the top two
advancing to the knockout round. It means we need at least two points in
the final group game against Exeter City next month, while also relying on
the result of Yeovil against Plymouth going in our favour, though Edwards
is just pleased we have plenty to play for when we travel to St James's
Park.
'We've gone into every game trying to win and so going to Exeter knowing
we have an opportunity still to progress gives us an extra incentive,' he
added. 'Of course there is a longer-term aspect to this competition – not
many of the academy teams progressed last season so it's about development
and tonight gave us a real test that the boys don't get very often. It's
nice to see them come through that as a team and individually there's
plenty of players who can take a lot from that.'
Our development squad return to action in Premier League 2 with a London
derby against Arsenal at Aldershot this Saturday 28 October. Kick-off is
at 1pm and supporters wishing to attend can purchase tickets on the door
priced at £3 for adults and £1 for concessions.
