https://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2017/12/ youth-cup-report--chelsea-v-scunthorpe.html Youth Cup report: Chelsea 4 Scunthorpe 0 Fri 15 Dec 2017 Our Under-18s began the defence of their FA Youth Cup crown with a comfortable victory at Aldershot this evening (Friday). A double from Callum Hudson-Odoi set us on the way before late goals from George McEachran and Tino Anjorin settled the third round contest against Scunthorpe. The damage inflicted could have been far greater had the hosts been more ruthless but a clean sheet plus a safe passage into the next round was enough to leave manager Jody Morris satisfied in our final Under-18s game of 2017. The Blues fielded four Under-17 World Cup winners in their starting team and were able to call on the services of several players who have spent the season so far with older age groups, including Reece James and Ethan Ampadu, the latter having made his Premier League debut earlier in the week. Morris opted for a 4-diamond-2 system with Hudson-Odoi and Martell Taylor-Crossdale the forward pairing, while McEachran started as the most advanced midfielder. Conor Gallagher lined up deepest with Billy Gilmour and Tariq Uwakwe comprising the remainder of the diamond. Four of our back five were starters in April's final victory over Manchester City, with Jamie Cumming in goal protected by Juan Castillo, Marc Guehi, Ampadu and captain James. With Everton, Manchester United and Manchester City having already exited the 2017/18 competition, the hosts were fully aware of the need to guard against complacency. Previous early-round successes were built on strong mentality and quick starts, which Morris emphasised in his pre-match musings. The Iron asked plenty of early questions of our defenders, delivering long balls forward and into the 18-yard box to test the appetite and application of our rearguard. Yet it was Hudson-Odoi who caught the eye in the opening exchanges, as he has so often this term, displaying early glimpses of his devastating acceleration in tight spaces. The forward utilised the attribute to fashion the contest's first chance after six minutes, his 20-yard effort well held by visiting goalkeeper Adam Kelsey. There was little Kelsey could do to keep the scores level for long though as Hudson-Odoi opened our account with the help of a kind deflection. The 17-year-old took aim at goal from 25 yards and caught his strike sweetly on the volley but it was the spinning trajectory after striking defender George Hornshaw that left the keeper helpless as the ball looped into the far corner. Scunthorpe managed to stem the tide after falling behind and the contest settled into more of a midfield battle, aided by some carelessness in possession from the hosts. Taylor-Crossdale was next to threaten 10 minutes after the breakthrough after he stole possession from a defender but his final shot was blocked well as he advanced into the box. The visitors knew sights at goal would be at a premium in Aldershot so it was no surprise that Lewis Collins's eyes lit up when he was slid in midway through the first period. As he weighed up how to put the ball past Cumming, Ampadu capitalised to snuff out the danger with a sliding challenge that was timed to perfection and measured in its impact. Down the other end, the Blues struggled to find a way through a disciplined defence and were reduced to testing Kelsey from range. Uwakwe's deflected drive dropped just over the crossbar before Hudson-Odoi fired narrowly wide with an effort that fizzed across the face of goal. Our early momentum and sharpness had faded but James ought to have doubled the lead when he was afforded a free header eight yards from goal. The skipper rose well to meet the ball but his aim was straight at the grateful goalkeeper. McEachran then had strong claims for a penalty after he was brought down right on the edge of the box but the officials decided contact had not continued into the area and awarded just a free-kick. That set-piece opportunity failed to cause problems but a similar situation on the opposite flank moments later forced Kelsey into further work. Hudson-Odoi was again the threat and fired a bending free-kick towards goal, though the visiting stopper was positioned well to keep it out. The Blues upped the ante for the start of the second half and carved out several clear-cut opportunities. Guehi got on the end of Gallagher's cross but his flick was turned behind before McEachran was denied by a super sliding block and Gilmour blasted over the rebound. Kelsey had to be alert and agile to keep out Hudson-Odoi as the hour mark approached, the keeper flinging out his left leg to kick away the teenager's low shot towards the corner. The tie had now become a game of attack versus defence, with the visitors unable to offer any forward threat of their own and camped deep in their own half. Ampadu couldn't quite make sufficient contact to Hudson-Odoi's inswinging corner, though it was our lack of clinical finishing in front of goal that kept the advantage stuck at one for so long. Gilmour somehow turned the ball over the crossbar from six yards out following another Hudson-Odoi centre before substitute Charlie Brown shot wide with his first touch of the evening. Another introduction from the bench, schoolboy Tino Anjorin, added an injection of vibrancy to our midfield and combined intricately with McEachran to fashion an opportunity, though another good tackle kept us out again. An unbelievable header off the line from Kane Bartholomew denied our captain and Hudson-Odoi cushioned his finish wide but the pressure finally paid off in the latter stages with three further goals scored in a 10-minute spell. Hudson-Odoi netted our second with 12 minutes of the tie remaining. McEachran turned provider with a run and cross from the right and a decisive finish was finally supplied inside the box by Hudson-Odoi, his ninth goal of the season to date. McEachran then turned finisher to make it 3-0 as he picked up the ball outside the box and found the bottom corner with a well-hit effort. The scoring was rounded off by substitute Anjorin three minutes from time, the 16-year-old exploiting a mistake in possession at the back and slotting home beyond Kelsey. It might have been 5-0 in added time as Hudson-Odoi led a blistering counter-attack but Brown could not stretch enough to make contact with his low cross. Nevertheless, the final scoreline was far more reflective of our dominance and control as Morris's men sealed their place in round four, where they will host West Brom. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- https://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2017/12/ youth-cup-reaction--right-approach--right-result.html Youth Cup reaction: Right approach, right result Mon 18 Dec 2017 Our Under-18s continued their long flawless record in the FA Youth Cup as they opened a new campaign with a comfortable victory against their counterparts from Scunthorpe United on Friday evening. A 4-0 scoreline could have been far greater had the hosts demonstrated more precision and ruthlessness in the final third, though a brace from Callum Hudson-Odoi plus strikes from George McEachran and Tino Anjorin booked a place in the fourth round for Jody Morris's side, who will face West Brom next. After the tie, Morris reflected on a performance that improved over the course of the 90 minutes, though he admitted there were frustrations at not recording a more significant margin of victory. 'The second half was a lot better than the first in terms of how fluid our play was,' the manager told the official Chelsea website. 'We managed to get players in one-v-one areas or going up against their back four a lot more than we did in the first half but credit to Scunthorpe because they were organised and tough to break down. 'We definitely should have scored more goals but I was pleased with our all-round play and felt we controlled the game. Our quality on the ball was much better after half-time, we put some great crosses into the box as well but once again our finishing let us down because we should have hit double figures.' During 18 months in the job as youth team manager, Morris has often bemoaned his side for missing a clinical edge in the final third. It is a constant call for improvement and the highest of standards that drives his players to their maximum. 'It's not an isolated incident, we always seem to miss plenty of chances and it's one of the reasons I wanted to put Tino Anjorin on because he's one of the best finishers in the group,' continued Morris. 'We just need to make sure we get a bit more ruthless with teams. We had a similar problem last season in this competition and missed plenty of chances the whole way through before it clicked into gear for the final. We know we'll have to be better against teams that don't give us as many chances.' However, there were enough positives for the manager to take away from our final Under-18s game of 2017, including a safe passage into round four and a professional approach from his players. 'I was particularly pleased with our two centre-halves because they were concentrated every time Scunthorpe threw something forward and we spoke about that before the game. We talked at half-time about not getting too anxious as the game dragged on with the score still 1-0. We felt if we got the second goal then we would get a few more. There are plenty of things to be pleased about, particularly the mentality, attitude and application from the older players in the group.' Our youngsters will host West Brom in the fourth round next month. Before then, our first scheduled fixture of 2018 will be on Saturday 6 January with a trip to Reading in the Under-18 Premier League.
