UYL report: Chelsea 5 Feyenoord 2
Wed 21 Feb 2018
Our Under-19s shared seven goals with Feyenoord in a thrilling contest but
ultimately ran out comfortable victors in the UEFA Youth League as they
booked a trip to Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.
Ethan Ampadu headed us into an early lead before further first-half goals
from Daishawn Redan and an own goal were sandwiched either side of a
strike back from Achraf El Bouchataoui to make it 3-1 at half-time.
Another own goal nine minutes after the restart sucked the fight out of
Feyenoord and Harvey St Clair added a fifth with a smart finish before
Noah Lewis pulled one back late on. The victory sends us into the
last-eight and a visit to the Spanish capital next month.
With our first team in action 24 hours previously, manager Joe Edwards was
able to field a strong side from the start for the last-16 encounter.
Ampadu, Dujon Sterling and Callum Hudson-Odoi lined up with senior-level
experience, the latter having been involved as an unused substitute
against Barcelona.
Redan led the line up front supported by Hudson-Odoi and St Clair as
Edwards opted for the familiar 3-4-2-1 shape, with Reece James, Ampadu and
captain Josh Grant across the back in front of goalkeeper Marcin Bulka.
Juan Castillo bagged a brace in the 4-2 win over Atletico Madrid that
secured our passage to the knockout round as group winners and was one of
two Dutchmen to start against his compatriots, along with Redan,
operating at left wing-back. Sterling started on the opposite flank, with
Trevoh Chalobah partnering Jacob Maddox in midfield.
The visitors were supported by a loyal band of travelling backers, who
greeted kick-off by setting off a luminous green smoke bomb, a sign of the
explosive start to come in which three goals would be shared in the
opening 15 minutes.
It was Chelsea Under-19s, winners of this competition in 2015 and 2016,
who started with purpose and pace, led down the left flank by Castillo.
The 18-year-old first delivered a teasing low cross but could not find his
fellow wing-back Sterling, who had darted in from the right, before he
displayed brilliant quick feet to fashion a chance but his deflected shot
flew behind.
The opening goal came with just six minutes on the clock as Feyenoord
failed to clear a corner to sufficient safety. Maddox picked up possession
on the right and swung in a perfect cross for Ampadu, who had found space
10 yards out and sent a cushioned header sailing back across goal and into
the top corner.
The boys from Rotterdam responded as Jordy Wehrmann, the captain, tested
Bulka with a rising drive but it was Edwards's side who moved into a
commanding position in the contest with a second goal four minutes after
their first. Our Dutch duo took on the roles of creator and scorer,
Castillo rolling in another perfect low centre and Redan sliding in for
his 12th goal of the campaign, his fifth in six games.
Feyenoord finished runners-up to Manchester City in the group stage before
overcoming Slovakian side FC Nitra in the play-off round and they proved
their credentials in fighting back to halve the deficit. Chalobah's headed
clearance lacked distance and the visitors worked the ball cleverly into
the box before El Bouchataoui's deflected effort beat Bulka.
Opportunities continued to be fashioned down both ends as an open contest
remained at a frantic tempo. Wouter Burger twice forced Bulka into work, a
bending free-kick plucked from the damp Aldershot air by our Polish
stopper, before Feyenoord keeper Justin Bijlow got enough on Hudson-Odoi's
close-range effort to turn the ball against the woodwork.
A slip from right-back Boyd Reith was close to proving costly as Castillo
advanced threateningly with the ball at his feet, though Hudson-Odoi
couldn't beat Bijlow as he bore down on goal. Castillo had better luck
moments later as he scored our third in fortuitous circumstances, his
delivery from out wide aided by a hefty deflection that looped the ball
into the air and over the stranded keeper into the net. Such was the
defender's intervention that it was recorded as an own goal against the
full-back.
Feyenoord provided a reminder of their threat before the break as Ampadu
was forced into some excellent covering defending at the near post before
Lutsharel Geertruida sent a header flying narrowly over the crossbar from
the resulting corner. Down the other end, Redan skipped beyond Bijlow but
couldn't strike at goal from a tight angle, while Maddox was denied by the
keeper after shooting on the spin.
Both sides were forced into changes at half-time as the visitors had to
replace their keeper, who had picked up a heavy knock just before the
interval, while Edwards introduced Luke McCormick into midfield and
dropped Chalobah back into defence. There was immediate defensive work for
the hosts to contend with as Feyenoord restarted brightly, threatening
with a few set-pieces, though the first notable opportunity brought a
fourth goal for our Under-19s.
It went down as the second own goal of the night but owed much to
Hudson-Odoi's craft and vision as the forward skipped into the box and
floated a cross to Redan at the back post. The striker won his header and
directed it back into the six-yard box, where Geertruida got the last
touch to send the ball trickling over the line.
An increased advantage for Edwards's side sucked the wind from the Dutch
sails and the Blues moved into full attacking flow. Substitute keeper
Jordie van Leeuwen made a flying fingertip save to push Hudson-Odoi's
deflected drive over before Sterling failed to keep a side-footed effort
down on his weaker left side after James threatened from the right.
Sterling turned provider moments later as he did well to keep his feet
under pressure and fizzed the ball right across the face of goal, all the
way through to Castillo on the left wing. The Amsterdam-born teenager
recycled the attack to St Clair on the edge of the box but his strike was
fired over the bar.
The Scotland youth international was more productive in front on goal 13
minutes from time as he netted his fifth of the season with a neat
front-post finish after McCormick's direct running had fashioned an
opportunity to deliver low from the left. It was a recurring theme in all
five of our goals as deliveries into the box caused Feyenoord issues all
night.
There was still time remaining for the visitors to pull one goal back as
Lewis was afforded space in the box from a corner and volleyed beyond
Bulka, though the final result and our passage into the quarter-finals was
never in doubt. Edwards's youngsters will travel to Spain next to take on
Real Madrid, with the one-legged tie provisionally scheduled for the week
commencing 12 March.
- Chelsea TV will screen a re-run of the game in full at 11pm tonight
(Wednesday) and again tomorrow at 8am and 1.30pm.

UYL reaction: Keeping standards high
Thu 22 Feb 2018
Another glittering display from our youngsters on the big stage saw them
book a place in the UEFA Youth League quarter-finals last night
(Wednesday) following a 5-2 victory against Feyenoord at Aldershot.
A header from Ethan Ampadu plus strikes from Daishawn Redan and Harvey St
Clair were coupled with two own goals as Joe Edwards guided the young
Blues into the last eight of the Under-19 European competition.
The manager reflected on some pleasing aspects of the performance but also
highlighted room for improvement, particularly in regards to the mental
approach and concentration of his players.
'It's mixed emotions for us because we're obviously pleased to have such a
convincing win in the latter stages of a European competition and it's
great to be into the next round but we let our standards slip after a good
start,' Edwards told the official Chelsea website after the victory.
'We had a clear game plan and the lads applied it perfectly early on but
we didn't maintain the high standards we set. We should have kept a clean
sheet from 2-0 up so it was disappointing to concede two goals,
particularly when you consider how well we have defended the box in recent
games against Leicester City and in the Checkatrade Trophy. We looked
sloppy and that's one aspect where the players mentally have to be more
consistent.
'They were outstanding at the start, really concentrated and everyone knew
their job but we took our foot off the gas. That can happen sometimes with
young players in games that appear to be comfortable but it's something
we're talking to our boys a lot about at the moment. It's being a bit hard
on the lads after a 5-2 win but there's nothing wrong with that – we set
high standards and will certainly have to maintain those as we move
forward in this competition.'
Edwards expanded on the detail of the game plan, which focused on finding
a way to break through a resilient and organised opponent.
'We felt we could hurt Feyenoord by opening the sides up and playing with
width,' the manager explained. 'After watching their games, we knew they
would get very compact and narrow without the ball so we put a lot of
attack-minded players on the pitch. Callum Hudson-Odoi and Harvey St
Clair can hurt any team and we also allowed Dujon Sterling and Juan
Castillo to play a lot higher as wing-backs than they normally do.'
The tactics paid dividends as the Blues raced into a 3-1 lead by half-time
before adding a further two goals in the second period, setting up a
tantalising quarter-final away in the Spanish capital against Real Madrid.
It will be a meeting between the two highest-scoring teams in this year's
competition, the 2015 and 2016 winners against a side beaten at the
semi-final stage in three of the past four years.
'These are the games you enter this competition hoping to get,' admitted
Edwards. 'We know the level will go up a notch because Real won their
last-16 game away in Munich [against Bayern] with 10 men.
'We'd usually like to have home advantage in a quarter-final but the
experience of travelling to Madrid and playing against a team like Real is
exactly what we want for our players, for their learning and development
but also for their careers and lives in general. It's going to be a
fantastic occasion for them.'
