Youth Cup report: Fulham 0 Chelsea 6
Tue 27 Feb 2018
Our Under-18s sailed into the FA Youth Cup semi-finals with an emphatic
win at Craven Cottage this evening (Tuesday).
With the score deadlocked and goalless at the break, the Blues kept their
cool on a freezing cold night in west London and scored six in a
scintillating second half that also saw Jamie Cumming, our goalkeeper,
save a penalty.
Martell Taylor-Crossdale came off the bench to net a 20-minute treble
after Callum Hudson-Odoi had forced an own goal and then netted one of his
own. Dujon Sterling also got on the scoresheet as our youth team reached
their ninth Youth Cup semi-final in a row, where they will face Birmingham
City over two legs.
Morris made four changes from our previous outing in the competition, a
2-0 win at Tottenham a fortnight previously. Hudson-Odoi, our Youth Cup
top scorer this term with four goals, returned in attack alongside George
McEachran, Tariq Uwakwe and Daishawn Redan, while Tariq Lamptey and
Clinton Mola started at full-back.
Cumming retained his place in goal following three clean sheets from three
on our run to the quarter-finals, protected by the centre-back pairing of
captain Reece James and Marc Guehi, while Conor Gallagher partnered Billy
Gilmour in central midfield.
With a dusting of snow resting on the pitch and the floodlights shining
brightly at Craven Cottage, the scene was set for a classic cup tie,
though Fulham's initial approach was to sit off with men behind the ball
and take the sting out of our early attacking intentions. James was
invited to shoot from distance inside five minutes but saw his drive
deflect behind off Jayden Mundle-Smith.
Gilmour then warmed the palms of Luca Ashby-Hammond with a rising effort
that was plucked from the frosty west London air by the home goalkeeper,
following good work to steal possession in midfield from Uwakwe and
Gallagher. The latter picked Fulham pockets again moments later, feeding
McEachran to set Hudson-Odoi in space on the left, though Mundle-Smith was
positioned well to make a recovering intervention in his own six-yard box.
Ashby-Hammond sprung to his right to push away a low strike from Gallagher
but the chance-creating threat from the visitors subsided as the contest
settled. The Whites caused occasional problems through the dribbling of
Tyrese Francois, the youngster beating two defenders with a mazy run that
was snuffed out well by the alert defending of Gilmour in the box, before
James thwarted the same home player with a brave block.
The midfield battleground took centre stage of the action for a spell
midway through the first period, punctuated by McEachran's strong burst
forward through the middle that earned a free-kick for Morris's men.
Hudson-Odoi lined it up and tried to catch the Fulham wall out with a low
one but the effort deflected behind for a corner.
From the following set-piece, delivered deep by Gilmour and recycled by
McEachran, Gallagher rose highest in the middle to head towards goal but
his effort was directed straight at Ashby-Hammond. The Blues ended the
half in the ascendancy but without an advantage on the scoresheet, Uwakwe
coming closest with a left-footed shot that brought a smart save from the
Cottagers' keeper.
The holders had generally enjoyed the better of the first half but Fulham
defended strongly and probably deserved parity in the quarter-final.
However, our passage to the last four looked a lot clearer after 11
minutes of action following the restart as Hudson-Odoi turned provider
then scorer to establish a 2-0 lead.
Our breakthrough came in the 51st minute after the visitors had started to
fashion spaces in behind to exploit and it was down the left flank that
the danger was caused. Hudson-Odoi found an area to gallop into and his
low cross was delivered teasingly in the corridor between defence and
goalkeeper. Redan was the intended target and Mundle-Smith had no choice
but to intervene, though the defender could do nothing but turn the ball
past his own keeper from close range.
Within five minutes, the deficit had doubled. A perfect pass was floated
over the top from the right and Hudson-Odoi trapped it brilliantly,
flicking it away from Djed Spence before drilling an unstoppable drive
across goal and into the far corner for his fifth goal of the cup
campaign.
After a cagey first half played at a slow tempo at times, the two-goal
salvo sparked the tie into life and the hosts fashioned their best
opportunity to date almost immediately after conceding the second. Reece
York scampered down the right and found Jayden Harris in the box but the
midfielder collided into Chris Kelly and the sight at goal was gone.
Nico Santos then fired a wayward strike high and wide before the Blues
extended their lead midway through the second period. Taylor-Crossdale had
only been on the field for five minutes when he struck, bundling the ball
past Ashby-Hammond from a few yards out, with the supply again coming from
Hudson-Odoi down the left wing.
Our youngsters were closing in on four matches without conceding in the
competition this term but their clean sheet was placed in serious danger
with 18 minutes remaining after Fulham were awarded a penalty. Guehi was
guilty of an error in possession and substitute Timmy Abraham pounced,
tumbling over the desperate efforts of Cumming to retrieve the loose ball.
Santos stepped up from 12 yards but our keeper made amends, diving to the
right and flinging a strong hand upwards to make the save.
The Blues were ruthless from that point on, adding three further goals in
the final 15 minutes. Another introduction, Sterling, notched the fourth
in some style as Gilmour cut through the Fulham defence and found the
substitute on the left. He collected the pass and performed a brilliant
pirouette to fashion space before curling a finish into the bottom far
corner.
Taylor-Crossdale completed a cameo hat-trick before the night was over,
heading Lamptey's cross past Ashby-Hammond before Lamptey starred again
to win a late penalty for Morris's men, jinking down the right flank to
entice a clumsy foul after moving into the box. The striker won the
argument for spot-kick responsibilities and fired the ball into the bottom
corner to cap another impressive Youth Cup night for our youngsters.

Youth Cup reaction: Right intentions rewarded
Wed 28 Feb 2018
The temperature may have been sub-zero but our youngsters were on fire yet
again in the FA Youth Cup last night as they hit six second-half goals
past Fulham to reach a ninth semi-final in nine years.
Martell Taylor-Crossdale came off the bench to bag a 20-minute hat-trick
after Callum Hudson-Odoi had forced the breakthrough following the
interval, initially crossing for Jayden Mundle-Smith to put past his own
keeper for the opener before making it 2-0 with a fine finish.
Dujon Sterling also netted an impressive goal, and Jamie Cumming made a
save from the penalty spot to preserve our clean sheet record this
campaign, which now stretches to four matches.
With a dusting of snow on the pitch throughout, manager Jody Morris felt
his side coped well with the unfamiliar factors, though he admitted there
was room for improvement after a flat first half.
'First and foremost you have to say it was a good win in difficult
conditions because to come away to Fulham and win 6-0 in a quarter-final
is an unbelievable scoreline against a good academy,' he told the official
Chelsea website after the game. 'It wasn't just the fact it was freezing
cold but there was a bit of an issue with the pitch still being iced over
when we arrived.
'There was a bit of flatness in our first-half performance and I think
that was because the players were a bit disappointed with the pitch but we
still needed to do a lot better. We actually moved the ball quite well but
without penetrating or creating enough chances and that was down to some
poor decisions when we did get into the final third, but also a lack of
urgency to run in behind or make the box.
'We totally controlled the first half even though it was 0-0 – they had
one moment when they came towards our goal and Reece James had to get a
block in but other than that it was all us. Having said that, we knew our
performance was a bit flat and also certain individuals were a little bit
flat too so we let them know that at half-time.'
Two goals early in the second period changed the nature of the contest,
opening up what had been a cagey affair. Morris felt Fulham were forced
into instigating their Plan B after falling behind, a more adventurous
approach that was exploited by the holders in recording a six-goal haul
against the Whites for the second time this season.
Our youth team boss also reported that certain tactical points were
emphasised at the break in order to coax improved displays throughout the
team.
'Fulham wanted to be tough to break down and had a lot of bodies behind
the ball so we always felt the complexity of the game would change if we
could score the first goal,' Morris explained. 'They then had to change
their approach, commit some bodies forward and that left gaps for us to
exploit, which we did by playing some good stuff.
'Callum Hudson-Odoi was one of the players we spoke to at half-time. We
wanted to let him know that he needed to be better running off the ball
and getting in behind, not just coming to feet all the time.
'The minute he played with that increased urgency, he created the first
two goals early in the second half so hopefully that will be a learning
curve for him. You need to play with the right intentions, which we did
both individually and as a team in the second half, and we got our rewards
for that.'
The victory at Craven Cottage takes our attempt to win five consecutive
Youth Cups through to another semi-final, where we will take on Birmingham
City over two legs. The first tie will be played at St Andrew's, with the
return at Stamford Bridge, dates for which will be announced shortly. In
the other side of the draw, Colchester United or Arsenal will play
Blackburn Rovers or Blackpool in the last four.
