A third win in four league games, all away from home, propelled our
development squad into fifth place after a dominant display in the
Midlands.
This was a good day all round for the Blues as Ross Barkley played an hour
and Daishawn Redan scored a hat-trick away at Derby County in Premier
League 2. St George's Park was the venue for our penultimate away fixture
of the season and Joe Edwards had four of England's Under-17 World Cup
winners in his matchday squad at the national team's training base. Conor
Gallagher made his first start of the season at this level in midfield,
while Marc Guehi debuted in defence.
The Blues opted to revert to three at the back following a 3-1 defeat at
Arsenal before the international break and captain Josh Grant joined
Richard Nartey and Guehi in a rearguard protecting Jamie Cumming in goal.
Gallagher partnered Luke McCormick in central midfield, with Reece James
and Juan Castillo deployed in the wing-back roles. Harvey St Clair joined
Barkley in supporting striker Redan in attack.
Only five points separated the two sides at kick-off, with the Rams
benefiting from an additional game in hand on the team three places above
them in the PL2 Division One standings. However, the form guide perhaps
presented a truer reflection and listed Derby with just one league win in
eight since the end of November, while the Blues had triumphed in four of
their last six.
With James and Castillo providing width and a direct threat from
wing-back, the visitors made a bright start under the grey Staffordshire
skies. The latter brought a key collection from Jonathan Mitchell with an
inswinging free-kick that gave the 23-year-old keeper an opportunity to
demonstrate his impressive reach under pressure, though Mitchell was
helpless moments later as we took an early advantage in the contest.
It was an opener crafted with quality and simplicity, McCormick switching
the play quickly to the right flank to find James and the England Under-19
international providing a typically inviting delivery into the box from
out wide to find Redan, whose close-range finish deflected up and away
from the falling goalkeeper into the back of the net.
That set the tone for a dominant first-half Chelsea performance and
opportunities were fashioned at will. McCormick went close to extending
the lead within five minutes when he hit a sweet left-footed effort just
past the top corner, but the Blues had only another few minutes to wait
before celebrating their second goal.
The combination between James and Redan worked to cause the damage again
as the defender supplied another low cross and the striker produced an
exquisite first touch to engineer space before swivelling to shoot
emphatically into the far corner for his sixth goal in eight appearances
for our development squad this term.
The Rams rallied without hurting their visitors. Edwards had spoken in the
build-up about using this contest to try out some of his younger options,
with the upcoming UEFA Youth League semi-final and the absence of Ethan
Ampadu and Jacob Maddox in mind. Guehi slotted in seamlessly to the back
three and timed a perfect tackle to thwart Jayden Mitchell-Lawson in the
box midway through the first period.
Down the other end, Castillo advanced and found Barkley at the back post
but the 24-year-old could not quite squeeze his shot on target from a
narrowing angle. Castillo then headed a good chance narrowly over before
the Blues rattled the woodwork in search of a third goal. Barkley used his
impressive upper body strength to initiate a counter-attack from halfway
and the move ended with a sight at goal for St Clair, whose fierce rising
strike was tipped on to the bar by an excellent save from Mitchell.
The visitors held their 2-0 lead into the interval but might have been
frustrated not to score more. James forced a smart save from Mitchell with
a header back across goal and Barkley's bending free-kick was collected
comfortably before Redan volleyed wide following another headed tee-up
from James. McCormick had the final chance of the half, arriving on cue to
hit a rising effort from 30 yards just over the crossbar.
There was far less goalmouth incidence after the restart as Edwards's side
demonstrated mature game management to preserve their lead efficiently.
Alex Babos gave Cumming something to think about with a free-kick struck
with pace and whip, though the ball dropped just off-target from Derby's
young Welshman.
Barkley departed the action after an hour and George McEachran replaced
him as Edwards continued to blood the younger members of his group. Derby
were improved in the second period but could not prevent a late flourish
from the visitors to ensure a three-goal winning margin.
Mitchell pushed away a shot from St Clair at a comfortable height and then
denied Castillo at the near post but the third goal was fashioned from the
resulting corner, delivered inswinging by St Clair. Redan was on the move,
darting into space before flicking a header inside the near post to
complete his treble.
Our development squad return to PL2 action in a fortnight with a home game
against Tottenham at Stamford Bridge on Friday 13 April. Before then, our
Under-18s take centre stage as their fight for silverware continues on two
fronts with the first leg of the FA Youth Cup semi-final on Wednesday 4
April followed by a league game against Southampton.

Our development squad made it four wins from five in Premier League 2 with
an impressive victory on the road against Derby County as they moved up to
fifth place in the table.
A dominant display against the Rams was justly rewarded with a three-goal
winning margin and a 10th clean sheet of the season as Daishawn Redan, the
Dutch striker who only turned 17 last month, netted a clinical hat-trick
at St George's Park.
After the game, manager Joe Edwards reflected on a performance he
described as one of the standouts of the campaign and praised his side's
ability to adapt and implement a carefully crafted game plan.
'I thought the first half was one of our best performances of the season,'
he told the official Chelsea website. 'We had to make an enforced change
to the starting line-up about an hour-and-a-half before kick-off but
fortunately our work on the training ground this week meant we were able
to be clear about what we set out to do.
'The players showed great application to execute the game plan and the
strategy of how we wanted to attack Derby, using our really attacking
wing-backs and the inside wingers. We switched the ball well and they
couldn't get out of their own half because we did it with real purpose and
discipline.
'To score three goals gave us a scoreline that I felt the performance
deserved because we were clinical in front of goal, had some great
attacking play and were equally solid without the ball – it was another
impressive win on the road for us.'
Edwards gave an update on the comeback of Ross Barkley, who started in the
Midlands and completed an hour of the action as planned.
'It's great to have Ross playing with us because he obviously brings a lot
of quality to the team and he'll be pleased with a solid hour of football
under his belt,' explained Edwards. 'Whenever he comes to play or train
with us he shows a great attitude for a senior player and does it
properly. We saw glimpses of his class and it's a big plus for the club to
see him back playing.'
Another individual who warranted a post-match mention was Redan, who took
his goalscoring tally for the season to 17 with three smart close-range
finishes. Edwards revealed the teenager was a doubt before kick-off but
recovered from feeling unwell to make a significant contribution.
'They were two outstanding goals in the first half and reflected our
complete dominance of the game,' the manager went on. 'Daishawn was
actually ill before the game and it was 50/50 whether he was going to play
so I'd hate to see how good he[d have been if he was fully fit!
Redan heads in at the near post to complete his hat-trick.
'He's only a first-year but he's come into our side since Christmas and
that's what he's done – score goals. He obviously had a lot of quality
around him today but to score a hat-trick at this level as a 17-year-old
is a really good achievement.'
Just two league games remain for our development squad, a Stamford Bridge
derby against Tottenham on Friday 13 April and a trip to Liverpool at the
end of the month, sandwiched either side of a trip to Nyon for our
Under-19s in the UEFA Youth League semi-finals.
Jacob Maddox's red card in our quarter-final win over Real Madrid will
mean he misses the last-four contest against FC Porto, while Ethan
Ampadu's ankle injury sustained in the same game makes him unlikely to
feature again this season. With that in mind, Edwards used the trip to
Derby to test some other options and he was pleased with what they offered
to the team.
'We gave a couple of younger players an opportunity,' he continued. 'Marc
Guehi and Conor Gallagher are two who were probably long overdue their
first starts of the season for us and there was a real focus and team
ethic about our performance.
'Derby changed their system at half-time and they were always likely to
come out stronger in the second half but I still don't think our
goalkeeper Jamie Cumming had a shot to save. We were quite comfortable and
entertaining to watch so I'm really pleased with the day's work.'
