https://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2018/04/ pl2-report--chelsea-v-tottenham.html PL2 report: Chelsea 1 Tottenham 2 Fri 13 Apr 2018 Our development squad led but were beaten at Stamford Bridge in their penultimate game of the Premier League 2 campaign. An uneventful first half showed signs of an end-of-season affair before Tottenham captain Christian Maghoma was sent off six minutes before the interval for a second booking. The restart promised more action and three goals in eight minutes provided the 3,000 supporters in the crowd with the entertainment they had come for. Josh Grant headed us in front from a Charlie Colkett corner but a pair of precise free-kicks from Keanan Bennetts turned the contest around, leaving the Blues sixth in the table. The hosts made six changes from an impressive victory away at Derby County a fortnight ago, though hat-trick hero Daishawn Redan retained his place at the point of our attack supported by the returning Jacob Maddox, Colkett and Harvey St Clair. Marcin Bulka also came into the side between the posts behind a reshaped back four consisting of Dujon Sterling, Trevoh Chalobah, Grant and Juan Castillo. Ruben Sammut, our only PL2 ever-present this term, wore the captain's armband alongside Luke McCormick in central midfield. Spurs made just two changes from their last outing, also a victory against the Rams, as they sought the three more points they needed to secure survival. It was Edwards's side who came into the contest as the in-form team in the league with four wins from five but the visitors made the brighter opening in SW6, moving the ball crisply and finding pockets of space. Their promising start forced Chalobah into some solid early defending, the centre-back reading danger and snuffing out opportunities, which meant the direct threat to Bulka's goal remained limited. Colkett was handed our first sight at goal after 15 minutes but missed the target with a central free-kick 25 yards from goal, before McCormick took aim from the edge of the box but cut across the ball a little too much. Maghoma's first booking came midway through the half after he was beaten by the quick feet of Redan, though St Clair's curling strike from the following free-kick could not beat the unmoving Tottenham wall. With the Blues firmly entrenched in mid-table and Spurs edging towards safety, the encounter lacked some of the more traditional bite normally associated with a London derby between these rivals. Wayne Burnett's side carved out their best chance of the first period on the half-hour mark as Kazaiah Sterling advanced into the box and capitalised on a gap to shoot, though his rising effort was watched just wide of the top corner by Bulka. With the game dwindling towards the interval, a long ball forward suddenly caused serious problems for the Spurs defenders and Redan was racing clear in behind before an untidy tangle with Maghoma. The referee deemed it an illegal intervention and therefore had no choice but to send the Spurs skipper for an early shower. The decision inspired the hosts into a brief flurry of attacks before the half-time whistle, a strike from St Clair well held by Brandon Austin and a speculative bicycle kick from McCormick flying over as it remained goalless at the break. The second half provided far more action for the supporters at Stamford Bridge, with the Blues looking to utilise their numerical advantage. The lively Bennetts forced a first save of note from Bulka after skipping infield form the right, while McCormick's range was less accurate as he missed the target twice from distance in quick succession. Edwards made changes in both personnel and system 10 minutes after the restart, introducing Callum Hudson-Odoi and Reece James in a switch to 3-4-2-1. The former's arrival almost paid instant dividends as he spread the play left for Castillo to deliver, though Redan's shot on the spin was blocked behind by Japhet Tanganga. St Clair then skewed an effort high and wide before the breakthrough finally arrived with 66 minutes on the clock. It proved a simple goal for the Blues as Colkett swung in an inviting inswinging corner and Grant proved quickest to meet it with a thumping near-post header into the back of the net. The young Blues appeared in the ascendancy but within eight minutes they were 2-1 down as a pair of precise free-kicks from Bennetts turned the game on its head. McCormick was the guilty man on the first occasion, penalised for a foul on the edge of the box, and the Spurs forward stepped up to curl a perfect effort into the top corner. The comeback was completed by the visitors moments later as Grant bundled into the back of a Tottenham man in an identical position and could only watch as Bennetts this time whipped a low strike around the wall and into the bottom far corner. Chelsea responded with a strike from Redan fired straight at Austin before St Clair flashed a shot across goal and agonisingly inches wide of the far post. The best chance for an equaliser fell to Hudson-Odoi five minutes from time as St Clair pulled the ball back from the right touchline but the substitute's fierce strike arrowed inches over the crossbar.
